New Job

I started the new job. It's instantly more responsibility. Monday was orientation, no big deal. Tuesday, I stayed home and worked on my "first 90 days" paperwork. Wed., I managed to make it in after traffic had eased and sun had warmed the roads. I took a tour and then my boss showed up. She briefed me that me direct report had earlier that week undergone an expected but expedited (performed earlier than expected) surgical procedure. She will be out all week. She may come in next week. Meanwhile, her work for the week hasn't been covered. I tried to figure out the basics, but the manual she created didn't provide enough info for someone untrained - it would have probably been enough if I had been through training...but since it was basically my first day...that wasn't the case.

Instead I was told that this was the start of her busy season and that they were in the process of hiring a temp to support her AND to replace her should she require additional medical attention. That task was shifted to me...along with a job description for my direct report so I could ask for someone with the right skills. OMG. I really didn't expect to be hiring on my first day in the office!!!

Meanwhile, my office is stark. I need to import some art to cover up the drab color of the walls AND I need to get some better lighting in the place. I also think I might need a new chair since the chair they gave me is kind of terrible (1/2 way through the day I switched to the fixed guest chair) I also need to alter just about ALL the preferences on my PC at work. I HATE the default fonts, etc. and I had forgotten the amount of customization that I had done at my old work. So I put in an email request to the larger department Admin to help me round up supplies (like a new key board, the one I have is kind of terrible) etc. He's super helpful so I'm hopeful he'll help me even though it's kind of not his thing. Take pitty on the new girl and all that.

So that was my first week in the office. The Holiday has given me reprieve and now I'm just looking at Monday and feeling like there is A LOT to get done!
