[character]: Merry Weather Hargreaves

[character history / background]: It is popularly believed that Merry is the daughter of Alexis Hargreaves, the former Earl of Hargreaves, and Alegra Duke, one of his maids. Alegra, otherwise engaged to another man at the time, loved her daughter dearly, and when her fiancé heard the rumors of her supposed intercourse with Alexis and became jealous, she ran away from the Hargreaves household with baby Merry to escape his wrath. He had always been envious of anyone who talked with her-- Alegra was his possession and no one else's. He would not let anyone else have her. Alegra knew that he would try to kill Merry Weather as soon as he found out about her, so there was nothing else to do but to flee.

Merry grew up with her mother in this way, jumping from household to household to work and never staying in one place too long. Alegra would not let the man catch up with them. But one day he did, and he knew of Merry's existence. She refused to go with him, did not listen to his crazed proclamations of love. Instead, she ate a powder poison, hidden away in a small compartment of the bracelet she supposedly received from Alexis, to save Merry's life, so he could not force any knowledge of her daughter out of her.

Merry returned to the house to find her mother dead, her murderer gone, and nobody but her friend Eric to turn to. Together the two of them ran away from the house. They made a living on the streets, Eric stealing and Merry giving fortunes-- and somehow they scraped by. But Merry Weather knew it was the Hargreaves who had caused this death. The poison in the bracelet had been theirs. After doing some research, Merry and Eric discovered who the new head of the Hargreaves was-- a teenager by the name of Cain Hargreaves, Alexis' legitimate son. Merry didn't know how she would manage to enact revenge on this man, this heir to the Hargreaves who had killed her mother, but she would find a way to make it happen.

As it happened, Cain chanced across Merry's little fortune telling stand on the street. With her tarot cards, she predicted that soon, he would encounter 'hardships and misery', and that there would be three deaths in his future-- the Hanged Man card told his fate. Cain wrote her prediction off as ridiculous.

Except two minutes later, a man who kindly returned Cain's dropped pocket wallet to him died. He had been scratched, poisoned by a needle set into the wallet.

Afterwards, a second encounter with Merry Weather and Eric left him in possession of Alegra's bracelet, as Merry had accidentally dropped it. When Merry personally went to his mansion to recover it, the two of them managed to learn a little more about each other, and Cain discovered that Merry was his half-sister. As she leaves his mansion, Merry warns him that her fortune telling was true-- two others were fated to die soon.

On her way home, Merry was attacked by a stranger. She managed to escape, but was shell-shocked by the attempt, and Eric had her rest for the remainder of the night while he took things into his own hands. Believing that Cain was the stranger who tried to murder Merry, he sent an anonymous message to Cain, inviting him to come out and try to kill Merry again. After that, he called the police, asking protection for when Cain would certainly come and finish the deed.

So Eric dressed up as Merry and waited at the appointed street corner. A cloaked stranger approached, and thinking that he'd caught Cain in the act, Eric ripped off the cloak and attacked him with a knife.

It wasn't Cain though. And he was the one who got stabbed instead.

Both Cain and Merry arrived to the scene moments later. As Merry tearfully mourned Eric's death, Cain figured out that only Landor, the police officer who had answered Eric's call, was the one who had known about the staged meeting. Together he and Merry went to the police office to confront him-- but it was soon revealed that Burgess, Landor's partner and brother, had been the one all along. He had been Alegra's fiancé, and he was the one who had tried to murder Cain with the poisoned needle. With a gun pointed to Merry's head, he explained the circumstances of Alegra's death; it had all been for Merry's sake. Merry Weather, enraged that this man Burgess had been the cause of her mother and Eric's death, and was trying to take Cain's as well, pushed at him, throwing her tarot cards at him and disorienting him. At Cain's command, she ducked-- and then a bullet from Cain's pistol hit Burgess straight on, causing him to fly backwards out the window and die.

With her mother's murderer-- but also her best friend-- dead, Merry had nowhere to go. Cain decided to take her in, promising to protect her always. Ever since, Merry Weather has stayed with Cain in London. He tried to integrate her into high society, while she continued to be a tomboyish girl despite her lessons, but she lived a happy if unorthodox life with him. And yet there was always some sort of death floating around the Hargreaves family that Cain gets himself involved in-- Cain called it the curse of the Hargreaves, the unnamable danger lurking at their doorstep that he didn't want Merry to get involved in. And so usually she is kept out of his interesting 'cases', expected to wait patiently until he returns. And so she does.

But there was one case of his that couldn't be hidden, no matter how much Cain tried-- and that was the betrayal and departure of his most trusted butler, Riff. Riff had apparently been working for Alexis and the secret organization Delilah, getting closer to Cain the whole time of his employ. When the opportunity called, Riff abandoned the Hargreaves household to take his place beside Alexis again, planning to help him with the destruction of the whole Hargreaves family. Merry couldn't understand it completely at the time, but she knew that it had left a deep scar on her brother's heart that not even she could repair. After several confrontations with Alexis' associates, Cain finally decided to head straight to Alexis' stronghold to confront him for a final battle.

Merry is taken to the City when she is riding the train with him and Oscar towards that final battle, her dreams seeking a place where she would be able to be with Cain forever...

[character abilities]: Intelligence -- Cain's high class lessons have taught Merry much as far as things such as ancient history, literature, and the arts go. She's well-versed in these sorts of topics despite being horribly bored with them. In addition to that, exposure to the peoples of high society has taught her how to behave properly before them, with appropriate etiquette and lady-like manners. She knows how to act "prim and proper", as she would call it, and how to use her cute and young nature to manipulate people into doing the things she wants, though it's hardly a skill she likes to use. She dislikes the falseness of the rich people in London, preferring her own honest, tomboyish nature. Merry Weather's early life on the streets has taught her much about such things like depending on oneself and doing one's share of work-- it was during that time that she discovered the usefulness of a clever mind, a sharp mouth, and quick hands, all qualities of which she possesses in abundance. She's a resourceful girl, and isn't afraid to dig deeper to find out what she needs to know.
Athletics -- Her life in the slums was full of less than virtuous deeds. Merry frequently stole from others back then, and thus at the present day is a good pickpocket when she needs to be. Needless to say, being a pickpocket requires some athletic ability, and Merry is just that, and not afraid to be, besides! She can match almost any boy her age in endurance, strength, reflexes, speed-- anything you can do, she can do as well, if not better. Any boy who looks down on her or thinks otherwise will have her on his heels.
Miscellaneous -- Aside from all this, she also has 'psychic abilities', able to see ghosts, and read people's fates in her tarot cards with frightening accuracy-- the only fate that she cannot read is her own.

[character personality]: Merry Weather has two distinct sides to her personality that rarely mix. Her first personality is the ever polite lady of London high society-- the calm and beautiful face that people have come to associate as Cain Hargreaves' polite, educated, and graceful half-sister. In this personality, Merry is a fortunate girl who has risen above the unfortunate poverty of the slums, one who has easily assimilated into the life of the aristocrats and has taken to its fancies. She is undeniably civil and demure, dropping curtsies as elegantly as any other noblewoman. While she still has much to learn about etiquette and the like, she is well on her way to being one of London's most eligible bachelorettes, even at her young age.

The other side of it is heavily influenced from her life in the slums, and is much more outgoing and open. This tomboyish side of Merry is never suppressed by her other personality. It is only with her older brother and closest friends will she forget about propriety and be direct and blunt with her feelings or thoughts. She is impulsive and can be quick to judge, and often has sharp words for those who belittle her about her age or her early life in the slums-- sometimes going so far as to yell or be physical with a person, though she is more likely to go after other children who say these things to her than an adult. Not to say that she has a nasty personality. Far from it; it is in this personality that Merry can show her genuinely sweet and cheerful self to her loved ones, a bright and childish spirit that is always eager to befriend others and share her joys and happiness with others. She finds little stock in social barriers because of how she grew up, and is not afraid to be forward with those she knows intimately-- not even a servant, because she has been known to give her brother's butler Riff pecks on the cheek. Before he betrayed them, that is.

These two personalities do not often collide with one another simply because of the very different settings she has to be in to slip into that mindset-- but she does have another facet to her personality in general that serve as a middle ground between the two. Ever since she has started living with Cain, she's become aware of the 'curse of the Hargreaves' that seems to follow him. There have been more than several attempts on both their lives, and the lives of their loved ones. Before, Cain only needed to take care of himself, but with loved ones comes the need to protect them. Merry especially is considered his Achilles' heel, and she herself is very aware of this fact as well. She often worries for him, hesitant about the steps he will take to keep her safe, especially since he often refuses to tell her what he is doing. The side of her that locks away her feelings, is quiet and somber, and puts gives fake smiles and laughs for those who will believe them, is the side that evolved because of Cain's secrecy-- and so she keeps most of these feelings secret as well, more likely to hide it behind more yelling.

Appearance: Despite being brought up in the slums, her new, luxurious life with Cain has accentuated her natural beauty to the fullest, and she can easily be called a blossoming rose in spite of her young age. Mary stands at 5'5", the best height for hugs, in her opinion. She's very willowy, with long limbs that are perfect for running and jumping and climbing. Others would perhaps find such gangling arms and legs awkward, but these features only add to the doll-like quality she possesses, among which include long and straight golden hair that flows past her back, childishly graceful curves, and crystal blue eyes set on a small and sweet face.

Being one of London's society's up-and-coming ladies always has her dressed to perfection. She normally wears dresses that have a lot of lace, ruffles, ribbons, or frills on them, with skirts often shortened to hang just below her knees. Cute accessories like hair ribbons, bonnets, and gloves are also often seen on her person.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Beginning of chapter 42 of Godchild.

[journal post sample]: [There is a a rustle of skirts, and then a soft yawn. Merry fumbles around for a moment.]

I'm crying... How strange, it wasn't even a sad--

[And then silence. There isn't even the sound of her breathing.]

Brother?

[The call comes quietly, barely even whispered. No. No no no no no-- had he left without saying goodbye? He wouldn't do that to her, would he? He wouldn't-- not Cain! She seems to scramble to get her bearings, her little heels click clacking loudly as she looks around her and finds that...nobody is there. Not even Oscar. And this place wasn't even London, let alone the train they had been on last she'd known. Merry's breath hitches as this sinks in.]

Where am I? Where did everyone go?

[A feeling of dread almost settles into her stomach. But...no, it wasn't completely dark. There was light up ahead...the light of...a carousel, it looked like. And voices. And if there were people, she could at least ask where she was. Yes, and directions that she could take to get back to the train station. She takes in a breath. That's right. Everything was alright. She was a big girl. If Cain and Oscar thought this was a funny practical joke to play on her when things were so urgent and serious, they were dead wrong. Slightly calmed, she dusts off her dress, muttering under her breath with a little growl.]

When I find those two jokers, I'm going to box their ears so hard they won't be able to feel them until next Monday. [Her voice gets louder, a little huffy.] Especially you, Brother!

[Her heeled shoes quickly walk away from her communicator. She hadn't even realized it was there on the ground.]

[third person / log sample]: Now that she had a goal in mind, Merry was much more self-assured, pacing as quickly as a dignified lady of London society could towards the carousel. Fie on her brother and Oscar-- let them watch her march all the way back to the train station all on her own. She didn't need them to help her. But as she approached the ride, she slowed down considerably, biting down on her lower lip. Why were they playing a joke on her, if they were? It just seemed...so cruel to do. The train ride had been quiet most of the way, the three of them immersed in their own thoughts as they approached the final battle ground where her father was. Cain had let her lean on him as she drifted off to sleep, too weary to think anymore...and his arm had held her against him so protectively, so gently-- she couldn't believe that it was a practical joke, even though that was the excuse that she'd made for herself.

But then if it wasn't a joke, how could she explain why she was here? If it wasn't a joke, then where were Cain and Oscar?

Merry stopped a few feet away from the carousel, looking up at it. It was bigger than the ones she'd seen before at fairs...much bigger. And there was an ominous feeling to it that she didn't like. The aura of the whole area, with impossibly tall buildings and the dimly lit streets surrounding her from all sides, seemed to press down on her-- stifling all of the bravery she'd mustered earlier. She tensed all at once, her body ready to flee with all of her might. It didn't even feel safe to talk to the people who were here anymore-- they were dressed so strangely, and they talked too loudly...but they were the only ones around, so she gave herself no choice. She would go and speak with them to at least get a sense of where she was right now.

Taking a deep breath, she clutched her handbag in her hands tightly before approaching, giving them a small curtsy and her politest smile.

"Excuse me, may I bother you to ask a question? Do you know how to get to the train station from here?"
