I'm reading Billy Bragg's A progressive patriot and Billy says that us on the left have to regain or discover a sense of patriotism. A sense which, obviously, will be found in different things to the people who say they are proud of their country. It's not something I’m good at so...I’m gonna practice.

Today Austeja got back her ID from the home office from registering with the foreign workers registration scheme. And they sent her a leaflet in Lithuanian about her rights, the minimum wage and employment with info about ACAS and Trade Unions.. This pleases me.
I know the borders and immigration agency are capable of terrible things. However, I think Billy has a point. He says he loves his country like he loves his son, he is aware his son does wrong and tells him so because he doesn’t want to spoil him but he loves him. That’s a model for grown up patriotism. So my country just did something nice. And for these five minutes, I’m proud of her.
