Time Served

Dad asked that I clean out the closet in his spare room. Between his brother and I, we managed to empty it with only 2 things I know he uses, remaining. At about day 3 into it he asked me why I was doing it. He's gotten really good at accepting his memory loss as he didn't even twitch when I said, because you asked me to. I'm still getting through what's left in my pickup, sorting for the garbage can or donation.

I found treasure, a medium sized box that held all his work papers from his career with the county engineering dept., and a photo album chock full of him, family, and friends, the places they'd gone, and I believe every car any of them had ever owned, driven, or sat in.

Only one thing really caught my attention. Hanging was his National Guard dress uniform. When asked he said he no longer wanted it, he only wore it a couple of times (?) and only for the funerals of his guard friends. I'm willing to donate it, but removed all the insignia, patches, and even the gold metal buttons which I'll replace with either black or dark green ones before it's donated. When I mentioned to him what I'd done, he said nothing, but that wisp of memory look on his face...

Of course wild brain activity took over and now I must purchase a deep frame, like a shadow box frame. I'm going to place a photo of him in that uniform in the center and surround it with all his insignia, patches and even those buttons, and put it up on his living room wall. He can't fool me and I have no intention of allowing him to completely forget the most rewarding pieces of his life when he was younger. See how the list of projects grows? 8D
