Ing, speaking of a commenter who has been spouting racist, genocidal bullshit against Muslims for months but is still there (bold is my emphasis):As an aside I have to address. I almost wrote “of being a dick” and went back and changed that. Do you realize that if I had slipped and not caught that *I* would be violating rules and get a deserved tribal pile on and shaming for using gendered slurs…but contrast that to StevoR. The rules are literally nicer to advocating genocide and murder than of using careless language. What the fuck happened here?
And I was reminded of this, bold my emphasis again:... I am still utterly disheartened, baffled, and disgusted that a community which retweeted #Mooreandme to the high heavens and will call for a round of furious signal-boosting at someone calling someone else "moron" suddenly finds that "purporting to be a feminist doesn't require [them] to turn off [their] brain and not look at things critically" when the accused is one of their own. And commenting is turned off, because I absolutely do not have the spare temper right now for the same old tired, bullshit rape apologia to be trotted out in a new suit made of jargon half-understood from Sociology 101.
Don't get me wrong, I think the language we use is an important thing. But it shouldn't be the most important thing. The hyperfocus in SJ spaces on every single possibly "problematic" term subverts the focus from the spirit to the letter, as it were. Avoid the wrong words and you can slip any nasty argument into the discourse. Which is what the tone argument is supposed to prevent.
