WASHINGTON (AP) - A friend says
a Maryland man accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace is a "gentle giant" who collected weapons and had expressed concerns about break-ins near his apartment complex.
Mike Cochran tells The Associated Press on Saturday that he thinks his friend, Neil E. Prescott, did not intend for his comments to be taken seriously. Cochran says Prescott was known for having a sarcastic sense of humor.
Police say Prescott, who was in the process of being fired, told a supervisor this week that he was a "joker" and was going to load his guns and "blow everybody up." Prescott was taken into custody for an emergency psychiatric evaluation and has not been charged.
Cochran says Prescott was "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness."
Let's evaluate.
There was just a massive shooting just a week ago that killed 12 and injured several dozen more.
There have been a great many workplace shootings in recent years.
Prescott owns weapons. Not just one or two guns, but a collection.
Prescott was in the process of being fired.
Prescott "joked" to a supervisor about going apeshit on his soon-to-be-former workplace.
...But expressing any concern about this is "political correctness."
And, of course, if Prescott had gone apeshit, everybody would be wondering whether there had been any warnings, and, if so, why they hadn't been heeded.
"Political correctness" has a long history as code for "I'm a whiny-ass titty baby who wants cookies and medals for shitting on people lower than I am on the social scale." I know it's also been used to argue that straight white men should be exempt from societal rules, but this is possibly the most egregious example thereof I've ever seen.
