Dom yawned and rolled over in bed. He stretched out one arm, expecting to find an expanse of smooth, warm skin, and found soft, cool cotton instead. He frowned and pressed his sleepy face against the sheets before cracking an eye to look at the alarm clock next to the bed; the digital display read half ten, yet he was alone in bed.

“Matt?” he called out, lips humming against the linens. “Matt?”

The bathroom door opened and the sound of running water filled the air. The scent of Matt’s aftershave, musky, spicy and masculine, tickled Dom’s nose and inspired a lazy smile to spread and linger on Dom’s face. No other fragrance comforted or aroused Dom quite like the scent of Matt’s aftershave.

“I’m in the toilet,” responded Matt over the running water, his voice echoing off the jade green bathroom tiles.

Dom made a raspberry-like noise of amusement against the mattress at his lover’s blatant stating of the obvious. “It’s early…we don’t have a thing to do today…come back to bed.”

An answer came in the form of a plastic click as Matt turned off the bathroom light. A soft, unseen hand moved along Dom’s back, lovingly tracing the sinewy muscles and velvet-soft skin. Tender fingertips slipped beneath the duvet to tease Dom’s bare bum and make him shiver.

“Mmm,” Dom sighed. He lifted a heavy, sleepy hand into the air, searching for Matt. He locked his fingers around one narrow, bony wrist and held tight. “Stay…”

Matt bent down and Dom felt his lips brush the nape of his neck, his damp hair tickling the shell of Dom’s left ear. “I promise I won’t be gone long.” He kissed a bit lower, his lips passing along one relaxed bare shoulder. “Do you want anything from the market?”

Dom shook his head numbly; the fog of sleep was settling over him again, the sticky fingers of fatigue had him firmly in their grasp. Even the butterfly kisses Matt was so tenderly placing along his shoulders and back could not keep Dom awake.

Matt pressed one final, wet kiss to Dom’s shoulder blade before drawing away. “Okay. I’ll be back soon, I promise.”

“You better be,” Dom mumbled through a yawn. Even as he burrowed beneath the sheets, he remembered to say the words he swore to always say before he and Matt said goodbye, whether they parted on good terms or angry ones, whether they were in a hurry or could take their time. He refused to let Matt leave his side without saying the words he had held within for so long. “I love you, Matthew.”

Unseen fingers passed through Dom’s hair, hesitation to part evident in the way the fingers twined in the tousled blond locks.

“I love you,” returned Matt.

One last stroke of Dom’s hair and then the fingers were gone. Dom was asleep before the bedroom door clicked shut.

Something was bouncing on Dom’s bed. The silent, erratic undulations of the mattress pulled Dom from his warm cocoon of sleep, leaving him awake and confused. He opened his eyes but remained huddled beneath the heavy red duvet, refusing to crawl out of bed.

“You’re home?” he called, seeking Matt out somewhere in the house, or better yet, somewhere on the bed.

In a repeat of that morning’s events, Dom rolled onto his back and stretched out an arm, seeking Matt’s warm body. Disappointment was followed by confusion as Dom did indeed find something warm in his bed-but that something wasn’t Matt.

“What the fucking-“

Dom sat up and found the warm body responsible for shaking the mattress and waking him up. Hopping sweetly across the duvet on two little white legs and two little black legs was a tiny, fuzzy Boston Terrier puppy. Dom gasped in surprise and joy as the tiny little body wiggled toward him and then, as if exhausted from scaling the fluffy, mountainous peaks of the duvet, flopped onto his side next to Dom’s hip.

“Oh…” Dom whispered, reaching out for the sweet, exhausted little dog. He picked the tiny puppy up-a boy, he noticed with a sly grin-and the puppy mewled, his little pink tongue sweeping out to swipe Dom’s nose. “Oh, you like kisses, don’t you?”

The puppy curled into a warm, fluffy ball against Dom’s chest with a tiny sigh. Dom smiled and leaned back in bed, resting his head against the headboard as he held the tiny body in his arms. His gaze gradually moved upward and finally settled on the figure leaning casually in the doorway.

Just as Dom had expected he would be, Matt was smirking widely, obviously quite satisfied with his little surprise. Dom’s heart squeezed with affection for the man across from him, the muscle threatening to burst with love. He knew only too well how selfish, demanding, and difficult Matt could be, but it was moments like this that made Dom feel like the luckiest man alive.

“Matt…” Dom sighed before words failed him. He grinned at Matt until his cheeks ached and pulled back the duvet with one hand. “Come here so I can thank you properly.”

With an excited, almost boyish burst of energy, Matt kicked off his shoes and leapt onto the bed. He landed on his stomach at Dom’s knees and crawled up toward the blond, kissing his way up the other man’s ribcage as he went. Dom watched Matt make his way toward the top of the bed before the singer finally settled in at Dom’s side.

“I bet you feel pretty proud of yourself, don’t you?” asked Dom as Matt’s head rested upon his chest.

“Very,” Matt agreed with a pleased cackle. He placed his hand on the puppy now nestled close to Dom’s neck and Dom threaded their fingers together so they rose and fell in time with the dog’s tiny breaths.

Dom looked at Matt, idly studying the beautiful angles of his face, and then at their joined hands. Finally, his gaze settled on the sleeping puppy curled up beneath his chin. The dog snored sweetly, already feeling peaceful and protected with his new owners. Dom felt a familiar prickling in his chest and knew it was the feeling of absolute contentment that only being with Matt could bring him.

“Thank you,” he whispered at last, his voice raspy with emotion. “I love him.”

Matt smiled and rubbed his clean-shaven cheek against Dom’s chest. “You’re welcome.” He pressed a fleeting kiss to the base of Dom’s ribcage before continuing. “I thought for sure you’d succeed in pulling me back into bed for shag and then I wouldn’t get to the RSPCA before it closed. I didn’t sleep for shit last night because I kept worrying someone had taken him before I could get there! I should have put him on layaway just to be safe.”

Dom snorted. “I don’t think you can put a puppy on layaway, Matt.”

“The hell I can’t, don’t they know who I am?” Matt huffed indignantly.

“Sure they do,” answered Dom with a teasing grin, “they just don’t care.”

The puppy, as if both offended by the idea of being put on layaway and by Matt’s egocentric posturing, stretched out with a mewl, his tiny nails scratching Dom’s chest and neck. After stretching, the puppy crawled off of Dom’s chest to stretch out between Matt and Dom’s bodies.

“You little traitor!” Dom exclaimed, watching the puppy lick the smooth column of Matt’s throat as Matt smirked. “I can’t really blame the little guy…that’s one of my favorite places to lick, too.”

Matt laughed. “Don’t get me hard, Dom; I’d hate to toss the little man out of bed so soon.”

Dom rolled his eyes and laughed before deciding, “He needs a name. I don’t want to call him little man or little guy all the time,” Dom announced, watching the puppy curl up sweetly next to Matt.

“Do you want a real proper rock star name? We could name him Slash. It’d be better than naming him Tom after Tom Morello...Kirk would probably take offense if he thought we named the dog after him,” said Matt with a smile. “Slash is a nice enough bloke; fine to smoke a fag with in a cupboard.”

“You still can’t get over that, can you?” Dom laughed and looked between his lover and the puppy curled between their bodies and smiled. “I think Slash is a good choice. I had Hendrix and now we have Slash.” He gave Matt a soft smile and turned his head somewhat awkwardly to kiss him on the mouth. He sighed into the kiss, but he had barely swiped his tongue through Matt’s mouth when he felt a gentle scratching against his chest-Slash.

“Sorry,” whispered Dom with a smile as he broke the kiss. He ran his fingers along Matt’s upper arm, his touch feather-light and achingly tender. “It’s going to happen a lot, getting interrupted by Slash. Slash will piss on the floor and eat your Italian leather shoes…not to mention interrupt our voracious sex lives.”

Matt grimaced, but his sour expression quickly turned to a smile. He let his fingers trail over Slash’s tiny body as he replied to Dom’s apology. “I know, Dom. It‘s all right.”

Dom lifted one eyebrow, surprised that Matt knew, and had accepted, the fact that their new roommate would seriously disrupt their rarely-occurring, hard-earned private time together. “It’s all right? You knew Slash would interrupt our private time together and you still got him anyway? I love him, truly I do…I’m just curious.”

“I…” Matt fell silent. He chewed on his lip, appearing to be in thought. “I got him because I knew it would make you happy, and because I wanted…I want…a family. A family with you.”

“Matt…” Dom drew in a sharp breath and looked into Matt’s eyes, feeling the blue irises burning into his very soul. “Fuck, I love you.”

Matt smiled crookedly and drew his fingers over the side of Dom’s face, making Dom shudder. “I love you.” He looked down for a split-second at Slash, who slept peacefully between them. “And I love our little family-thing, too.”

Dom smiled as his heart swelled. He felt so much for Matt, so many things he could describe with words and could only express with his eyes, his lips, and his body. He looked up at his lover with shining grey eyes, expecting to be met with the same kind of euphoric smile that was on his own face, only to find Matt yawning.

“Sorry,” Matt said, drawing a hand over his mouth. “Some of us haven’t been lazing around in bed all day like an arse…we were out buying surprise puppies and the lot.”

Dom snorted and let one hand drift through Matt’s soft, un-styled dark hair. “Then sleep. Sleep right here with me, and with Slash-your family.”

Matt finally smiled, giving Dom the joyful grin he’d been waiting for, and pulled Dom close to him with a leg and an arm. Dom pressed his forehead to Matt’s, grey eyes locking sweetly with blue, and brushed a whispering kiss along the singer’s lips. Slash, as though he knew he was being ignored, let out a little whine.

“We love you too, Slash,” Matt said, rubbing his free hand along the tiny creases in the dog’s brow.

Dominic smiled and gazed into Matt’s eyes. “Always."
