Into the Dark Night
Chapter 2
“Mommy, why is it always so dark?”
Yunho watched gloomily from his spot on the sidewalk as he leaned on the wall for support, one foot propped up against it while his hands stayed buried in his pockets. A little girl, probably about 5 years old, stopped in the middle of the street to tug on her mother’s sleeve, the question erupting from her lips innocently.
The mother looked disturbed, not quite knowing what to say.
“It just is, sweetie.” she attempted.
“But why, mommy? Water keeps coming from up there too! All the time!” She said, as she pointed up, indicating the rain and tugged harder on her sleeve.
Her mother looked worried now, completely unsure of what to say because in all honesty, no one really knew why. In fact, it’s become so daily that no one bothered to question it and simply went about their lives.
She sighed and kneeled down in front of her daughter.
“Our city has been like this ever since, honey. It’s dark and rainy because it just is.” She had a difficult time forming words as her daughter’s eyes widened in curiosity.
“But, mommy-“
“M-maybe one day, you and I can go see the sun one day. How’s that sound, dear?” she tried to avoid the topic, smiling sheepishly at the small girl and thankfully, she looked satisfied.
“Okay!”
Both Yunho and that mother knew though that the probability of that ever happening was close to zero. Unlike here though, he knew why that was.
Their power source-more specifically, their Lord’s power source came from the darkness. Their city ran on it. It was used to fuel the buildings, their electricity, everything. He wasn’t sure how it really worked, and he really had no intention of finding out. Lord Youngwoon scared him.
A thought came to him. Ever since the Lumici were detained, it was as if the light disappeared with them. The sun never seemed to make its presence known, and he briefly wondered if the star had actually reached its limit and burst. Nonetheless, Yunho had this gut feeling that their disappearance had something to do with it.
Sad truth was, he’s never even seen a Lumiciant. Not once.
It was said that they were beautiful creatures, flawless skin, and silky hair. It was even said that their skin actually glowed, not shined but glowed. He wondered if they looked anything like a normal human, just…beautiful. He wondered what made them special.
Did they have powers?
They probably did. Why else would the rumor go around that all the Lumici were being kept at a reserve at the far edge of the city? If it were true, why would Lord Youngwoon keep them to himself? Only people of high rank and of the Special Forces were allowed entry. These were just rumors though. All speculation. Sadly, that did nothing for his burning curiosity.
He really wanted to see one.
Spotting a familiar figure briskly walking in his direction, he immediately pushed himself off the wall.
“Hankyung hyung!”
Hankyung regarded him shortly, obviously still angry about his unsuccessful mission. “Yunho.”
The younger man gulped, sensing something wrong. “How’d it g-“
“We lost them.” He replied shortly.
Yunho quickly deflated, his chances of seeing a Lumiciant down the drain. Again. He sighed loudly.
Hankyung shot him a look.
“You think you’re upset.” He scoffed. “Come on, they’re probably already looking for us.” He said as he got in the car and gestured with his head for Yunho to follow.
He sighed again as he walked to the vehicle, his shoulders drooped.
“Well, at least you’ve seen one! Highly ranked officers and their damn privileges...” He muttered.
“What’s so great about seeing a Lumiciant?” His eyes darkened a fraction. “Don’t think highly of them, Yunho. They’re just a bunch of bloody traitors.” Hankyung sneered as he sped down the road.
Quite frankly, Yunho could never begin to understand how such beautiful creatures could be evil. But for his own sake, he let it slide and left his hyung to his thoughts.
It wouldn’t do him good to get on Hankyung’s bad side; he was his best chance at this.
He really wanted to see one.

Kyuhyun yawned as he ran a hand through his disheveled hair, dragging his feet across the room.
“Morning, sleeping beauty.” Sungmin chirped.
Kyuhyun’s smooth reply stopped short as he caught sight of the kid in his arms.
“Holy Shi-“ Sungmin was quick to put a hand over his mouth.
“Kyu! Your language!”
“Sorry.” He said robotically as moved the hand off his mouth, eyes never leaving Donghae. “It’s just…” He tried to rub sleep out of his eyes, maybe he was dreaming. “…wasn’t he a baby just yesterday?”
He stared openly at the toddler in front of him, obviously a lot larger than the child he was carrying through the streets the day before. The boy had grown about three years’ worth in just one night. He even looked just about ready to run around the house, as opposed to his previous state of blubbering and lying on his back as he sucked his thumb.
Donghae stared back, eyes bright and curious. It wasn’t long until a smile graced his lips. The boy was always, always smiling. Kyuhyun couldn’t help but follow suit.
“Amazing, isn’t it? I’ve forgotten how fast our kind grew! Not that I would remember, though. I was a baby, of course I wouldn’t remember. That would be ridiculous. But really, he’s growing extra fast! Faster than normal! Maybe-“
He tuned out Sungmin’s hyperactive blabbering and looked straight into Donghae’s eyes. He remembered how he burst into the reserve yesterday and how the child had caught his eye immediately. It might’ve been how he glowed the brightest and somehow illuminated the dark room. He didn’t know why, but he was suddenly so sure of which baby to get out of that hellhole. Looking at the boy now, he felt glad that he and Sungmin had thought of this plan.
They’d wanted to save one baby, at least one.
Besides, they were starting to get lonely.
“-he’s absolutely adorable! You certainly have a good eye, Kyu. Oh, I can’t wait to teach him his ABC’s and his colors and everything!” Sungmin squealed.
“Min, you do know we have to teach him about…?”
Sungmin smiled sadly. “Yes. Yes, of course I know.” He unconsciously patted Donghae on the back, drawing the boy closer.
They both looked down, memories eluding them. Life as a Lumiciant had never been easy. Ever since…
Feeling the sudden change in atmosphere, little Donghae looked from Kyuhyun to Sungmin, wondering what could be wrong.
“Kyumin~” he whimpered.
And just like that, they melted on the spot.

Thump thump thump.
Eunhyuk sped down the candlelit corridor, passing by numerous classic paintings and antique doorframes, his boots colliding with the carpeted floor in rhythmic intervals.
Thump thump thump.
He’d reached the end of the hallway and inhaled a quiet breath before twisting the handle.
From his seat, Siwon looked up at the sound of the door opening and raised his eyebrows at the sight of the redhead. Eunhyuk was a bit surprised as well to see the other Rife.
“You called him too?” Siwon turned to a man seated at the large desk centered in the room, though he wasn’t really expecting a reply. He eyed the other as he stood in the doorway, the sound of raindrops pattering against the windows as thunder roared in the distance.
“Hyukjae,” Soo Man gestured to the chair across Siwon. “Have a seat.” Eunhyuk complied obediently despite his confusion at the other Rife’s presence.
He usually worked alone.
“Relax, you two.” The boss assured, noticing their obvious tension as he folded his hand together neatly under his chin. “You have different tasks.”
They both visibly relaxed at his words, their shoulders loosening up though they don’t remember tensing them in the first place.
“I’d be damned if I sent the two of you out on one platoon.” Their boss muttered.
Eunhyuk and Siwon chuckled lightly at his words. It really was true.
Having been born as a Rife, Eunhyuk had trained in combat since he was barely able to walk. His mode of thinking and mentality was molded into that of a superior mindset, able to find the solution to every problem no matter how complex, formulate a plan and execute it swiftly and efficiently; no strings attached. His heightened abilities and senses being the sole reason for his survival throughout this forbidding process any child would break down in under any circumstance.
The weaker ones, on the other hand, the ones who despite their inborn capacities, they could not keep up with the harsh training-it being too much for the children’s feeble minds-they were never seen again.
All Rife had to go through it. They were superior beings, yes. But more importantly, they were the perfect weapons.
Able to accomplish any mission speedily and with lives much longer than that of a human, their minds worked calculatingly yet they had the capacity to think on their own and make their own decisions based on the most profitable solutions, something that came handy to humankind. The hassles of programming gone down the drain.
They were slowly treated like machines; what little humanity they had left abused by humanity itself.
The SM Corporation was notorious for this ‘weapon’ being the only existing organization that offered their services, as Lee Soo Man had discovered the race himself and being the witty man he is, made a living out of them.
Eunhyuk and Siwon were two of his elite unit of Rife. They were a cut above the rest, along with a select few, given the most important and urgent missions. None of the elite class worked together on one mission, in fact, it was unusual for any two Rife to team up. Having more than one superior mind simply threw everything off balance.
They were never trained for teamwork.
“Key arrived yesterday with Intel.” The old man looked them in the eye, “Lord Youngwoon has availed of our services. I’m sending one of you to him.”
The two men’s curiosity peaked at the mention of the Lord’s name. Years ago, Kangin had so obviously sworn not to heed their aid.
“It seems he’s lost something and is asking for our help in finding it.”
Eunhyuk raised an eyebrow. “And what might that be?”
“A Lumiciant.”
Now, they were even more confused. The Lord had an entire reserve of Lumici, why would he go through the trouble for one…?
Unless…
Eunhyuk’s eyes widened briefly as it all started to make sense to him.
“It can’t be…”
“It’s the Solis.”
The resounding echo of unsaid words filled the room, as rain seemed to pour harder and harder.
- - -
“Told you he’s not here.”
Two pairs of eyes quickly surveyed the area, the rain not giving them much aid in searching for a certain missing boy.
“Five days! We’re only had him for five days, Kyuhyun, and you lose him. Five! That’s not even a week!”
He pouted a bit at that, “Hey, it’s not my fault the kid suddenly sprouts legs and wants to run around the damn place.”
“Ugh. We are not having this conversation again.” Sungmin unconsciously wrapped his cloak tighter around his body, drawing the hood over his face. “Come on. Let’s go look somewhere else.”
Kyuhyun frowned a bit. They’ve looked everywhere. He was starting to get genuinely worried about that ball of hyperactive energy.
“Hey,” Sungmin put hand on his shoulder and gave him a comforting smile. “He’ll be alright. Don’t worry.” Although, he sounded unsure of it himself.
“I know.” He looked at the beautiful man in front of him and felt himself smile. Which quickly turned into a smirk. “Don’t drag me down to your level of hormonal stress, Min.”
“At least he wasn’t being dumb and actually brought his cloak!” he retorted cheekily, smiling from ear to ear.
If it weren’t for the fact that Sungmin ran away almost immediately after he finished his sentence, he probably would’ve kissed him then and there.
- - -
He skipped down the sidewalk, letting his feet land only on the small puddles formed by the rain. He hummed lightly to himself, quite satisfied with finally being allowed to go outside. It’s been a while.
Sungmin had always been so strict and worried about letting Donghae out and though he knew it was for his ‘safety’ because they were ‘different’, they had to have special rules. Like not going outside with a cloak because then people would see him. He puffed his cheeks at that. How was he supposed to make friends if people weren’t allowed to see him?
Kyumin-he liked to call them that-are very entertaining. They really are. They fought almost all the time with Kyuhyun smirking and Sungmin flailing. But he wanted to meet new people too, or make a friend.
He thought of how his two hyungs were always together and smiled.
Yes, a friend sounded nice.
The sky got a bit darker overhead and Donghae looked up at the clouds forming, rolling over each other.
It’s gonna rain harder now. He smiled a bit at the thought.
After all, he found he didn’t really mind the rain all too much. Kyuhyun said he found that weird about him. He said their ‘kind’ usually dislike rain. It was against their nature, or something like that. He figured it was okay to be different. He liked the way the raindrops felt when they fell lightly on his skin.
He was tempted to just take off his cloak right there. Sure, it kept him dry (he never understood why, Sungmin just said it did) and all but the hood was starting to annoy him since it limited his vision so much.
He ducked into an alley and quickly looked around, checking if anyone was there. Luckily, the coast was clear.
Muttering a quiet ‘Yes!’ under his breath, he shook his head so much from left to right his hood fell off, revealing a head of soft brown tresses.
“Finally!”
Donghae stretched his arms above his head, as if a huge burden was just let off his shoulders. “Ah~”
His stretching came to a stop as he remembered something and quickly brought a hand up to his hair, sleeves pooling at the bottom of his pale forearm.
Still dry.
He never told Kyuhyun and Sungmin about how his hair never seemed to get wet even when it was raining. Partly because he’d definitely be scolded for taking his hood off in the first place but mostly since he figured he freaked the two out enough already-what with his alarming growth rate and preference for rain.
He sighed soundlessly. Sure, having his hair stay dry was convenient in not getting caught taking off his cloak but he honestly wanted to know it feels to actually get his hair wet.
“Oh well~” He shrugged it off and continued jumping into water puddles, liking how it felt when his bangs bounced with him.
Donghae wasn’t the type to stay sad for long.
Suddenly, two pale hands reached out from behind him, caught the struggling boy and dragged him through a door.
“That’s dangerous, you know.” A silky voice reached his ears. -- ♦
