Got the full scoop last night. In a woman my age, vitamin D levels should be at 40. I am currently at 24. This is bad. It's not end-of-the-world bad, though. So, he wrote me a prescription for vitamin D, at the level of 50,000 units per dose, to be taken 3 times a week. (A normal supplement, by contrast, is like only 1,000 units.) I'll be on this regimen for 3 months, then, on to a daily normal supplement. In one year, he'll check it again, to see if I am retaining.
I asked him if a tanning bed would simulate sunlight close enough to assist me. He was stumped, but, will research it. I mean, it may be largely psychosomatic, or perhaps a fringe benefit of the tanning oil, but, my itching did lessen in great degree while I was tanning before the wedding. Despite all the stress and crap of the wedding, I DID feel better then. Mayhaps a touch of SAD, too, there? Who knows???
He likes to take a conservative approach, and I can respect that. So, I'll follow his plan and see if it makes my symptoms any better. If I don't, then I go back and tell him, "doc, it ain't workin'. It's time to send me to an endocrinologist methinks."
So. Onwards and upwards...
(And yes, even though all my other nutrient levels were not bad, I did resume my daily vitamin regimen this morning.)
