interesting point in regards to this entry. in comparison to your last entry, that ultimately your focus should be on daniel cook defining daniel cook, this one makes the opposite point that the focus for the world should be on the relationship the world has with the individual, not the individual by itself. what's it gonna be? ;-)

I realized that as I was writing it up actually. Ironic, huh? I think I lost my own meaning by trying not to be too specific, but trust is, in the end, only your opinion, right? The concept of friendship (well, this makes sense to me at least) is that you associate yourself with people like yourself, and because of this you begin to treat those others as yourself and furthermore don't need to be concerned in the least with things do not apply to you, or those of "your kind

So what we have here is basically two main ideas: that you can define yourself without others and that you can define yourself through relationship with others. To me, it's obvious that relationships define you more than you can define yourself, but really if you are defined by others than you are not separate. They are as important to you as you are to yourself, and it follows that you are as important to them as they are to themselves. It's a tug and pull. So this helps to support the argument that we are selfish, but altruistic all at once. We care for others, but that care ultimately is selfish in that caring for others really just makes us feel better as individuals. But, because the others are as important to us as we are, the care is simultaneously becomes altruistic. I may have missed your point, but there you go.
