well... I'm not sure how much you'd like to spend on a lens or how wide you want it to be, but if you're looking for a nice zoom, I'd go for canon's ef 28-105 f3.5-4.5 II USM. a nice range (about a 44-170mm with your camera), and quite exceptional for the price... you could easily find it for less than $250. I've spent some time with most of canon's zooms and this is easily one of the best non-L lenses... a great walk-around lens, which I think is what you want.
you might know this, but I feel like pointing out the downsides in zooms. first, they can give you too much to work with, and I see a lot of people zooming in and out, trying to hunt for a good composition without moving themselves. I find it better to stick with a single focal length and make yourself work to find a good composition.
and, maybe this is surprising, but I've been using the 50 f1.4 USM lens for almost all of my recent photography (everything but macro work). and I think that's working pretty well :)
but still, zooms can be useful. just try to limit yourself. if you have the money, I'd probably go for a couple of primes instead.
