It is lovely out today. I should go do something. Maybe I will walk down to Fairhaven in a while. Marcus is in Seattle this weekend, so I am alone and not realy used to that anymore. It was wonderful to be able to sleep in today. I needed it after this week.

I went to see Smart People last night. I went sort of last minute because I was bored. It was a strange little film, rather mediocre as a whole. There were definitely amusing and interesting moments, and I like narratives about how people become absorbed in something that they do (their career, school, etc) to hide their unhappiness and how this practice can lead to some self-absorption. The comments on academia and English departments were sort of fun (even though I dont think that Quaid was a convincing English prof). The ending of the film was rather weak and very simplistic. I think that a film like The Squid and the Whale, which covers similar ground, is a better film. Ellen Page and Thomas Haden Church were much more impressive than Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker. Smart People surely does not need to be seen on the big screen. It might be worth seeing on dvd, but it is probably best to watch with low expectations.

I should start reading Mumbo Jumbo today. I have to give a presentation on it on Tuesday. blah.
