suemac has always wanted to be able to park her car in the garage. I've resisted this with all my might because by golly I want every square micron of that garage for workshop space! Electronics, furniture building, lutherie, bicycle repair, it all takes space. Not to mention all the junk er, stuff er, parts for projects, yeah that's the ticket, that I accumulate all requires storage space. On top of that pile the boxes of kid keepsakes and a whole bunch of Christmas decorations. Oh and let's not forget at least one bicycle for every member of the family and a weight bench, as well as the gas grill and smoker. Last but not least there are two 50cc scooters to keep parked out of the weather. Clearly the notion of using the garage as a garage is so far off the radar that it's probably not even airborne.
What I've always aimed for is something along these lines, but after rereading
this article yet again, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I couldn't slim down my garage space desires some and pull off the mindbending feat of jamming my multiple workshop spaces, storage and shelving, and
suemac's car in there all at once. Teague managed to put together quite a shop in 9x18 feet. Our garage is 20x28, and one of the cars will take approximately 10x16, so I ought to be able to come up with a long L-shaped arrangement that would wrap around enough floorspace to park a car. Gotta get out the tape measure and scratchpads and start re-finagling the whole darn thing, I guess.
One thing I know will help matters a bit is to pull that shed off its sinking, sloping, rotting plywood floor, tear up said floor, build a new floor above-grade, and reset the shed. Add in a fan or two and some lighting, and it'll be a much more viable storage space. I could get all the yard tools and some miscellaneous bulky items out of the garage, and maybe one or both scooters. The other pending backyard project is a deck off the dining room and office, which will get the grill and smoker out of the garage.
Yep, gonna be a busy fall and winter here at Stately Eight Bit Manor™. :)
