Audition...

So, audition for access course…

I arrived 10 minutes late in the middle of a declaration that arriving 10 minutes late would be formally noted against you on this course, and 20 minutes would debar you from taking that day.

So, good start, eh?

This is particularly bad, of course, cos I kicked up about the college’s refusal to kick out certain poor attenders on the foundation. When later I had the post audition interview with Brian the irony was not lost on either of us. He actually looked as if he wanted to larf.

Anyway…

A little voice work, a little game with a ball, reactions and mutual support exercises - you know the drill. Then there was an improv - Lynne and I went first and I think that went well. Eric then with a lady with talent not from the Foundation called Lauren - I think she may well make it on. And then a lady who did the Foundation in another group, Anna, and another chap, Dan, who has just done some short courses and stuff.

And he isn’t getting on. They suggested he take the foundation, and with reason. But I hope takes their advice.

And then our scenes. I went last, and this was my little nugget of luck, because Brian hadn’t been able to attend, and then walked in at the end. So he saw me Hamlet and me Godot.

It was mentioned in the interview afterwards that Hamlet was a “brave” choice. I prefer to think of it as a gobsmackingly arrogant choice, myself. They took issue with some things but broadly seemed to like it, and seemed to like my reasons for taking some of the decisions I did with it.

They liked the Godot - although I wasn’t happy. Thought I had that one down, but I did flounder a little with the words. Nothing big, but I had thought I’d nailed it. And that seemed to go down very well.

Vernon, the other tutor taking the audition, said that I was a little top heavy - highly intellectual and could do with more viscerality. There was viscreality, but possibly the balance was wrong. Quite possibly fair comment - I think I have that tendancy. He also said there were one or two moments of going for effect, which is true, but it is Waiting for Godot - you have to have a little effect in an absurdist piece, don’t you?

Anyway, they said that they weren’t telling anyone yet and that they would have to finish the Foundation auditions as well as the Access but that we should know in a few weeks. However, they did say that they were interested. They were definetly interested, so I think I’m on the starting list - and I’m not aware of anyone else having been given as positive a nod on the way out as that. So, hopefully, I made it.

We’ll know soon enough….
