It's the Eagle Awards tonight at the
MCM Expo in London. To many, these have and will always be the BAFTAS of the comics world. Granted, in recent years the shiny of the awards has been tarnished somewhat, but tonight many hope that the Eagles will finally return to greatness.
I'll be at the Eagle Awards this year as I've been nominated for several of them. Eight in seven categories, actually. Favourite Writer for myself and then six nominations for my Doctor Who books. And a final one for From The Pages Of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula': Harker, which is actually competing against one of my Doctor Who books.
Now granted, one of the Doctor Who nominations is the wonderful Ben Templesmith's cover for Doctor Who: The Forgotten #6, but being nominated for eight awards, even with that loose connection on the last one is incredibly humbling, a great honour and a true testimony to the loyalty of the Doctor Who audience. To see seven nominations (Charlie Kirchoff's Doctor Who: Black Death, White Life is also nominated) for a book printed by an independent publisher, a title not even able to be legally purchased in the UK (as the license prohibits ordering through Diamond UK or something like that) is incredible, and is actually better than winning even one of these.
I'm very much aware that I'm not going to win any of these awards, however - as even though I have great and loyal fans out there, I'm up against the big boys, with DC and Marvel pretty much in every category. I don't even know how I rated against the likes of Alan Moore, John Wagner, Geoff Johns and Warren Ellis for 'Favourite Writer' and if I did win, I'd be in two minds on whether I'd actually accept it, or call for a recount.
But in less than twelve hours, I'll know. And so you know which ones to follow, these are the awards I'm nominated in. Wish me luck!
