There are a few things in a writer's life that mean something, something more than just a simple 'well done'. Usually they are in the form of awards and lists, things to be on that cause happiness, things that if you're on the top of, you have even more happiness. As a writer working in the trenches of the industry these lists and awards are often way above my pay grade, but this weekend I was given one of the greatest 'well done's of my career to date, when it was announced that Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: The Graphic Novel is the #1 paperback graphic novel on the New York Times Bestseller List.
That's right. I am a New York Times Best-selling Graphic Novelist. Better than that, I am a #1 New York Times Best-selling Graphic Novelist. Granted, I have to hold my hand up to the fact that it was the title and the brand that sold more than my writing, let's face it - Pride & Prejudice & Zombies the novel has sold over 700,000 copies - but at the same time there was a lot of sweat and blood put into that adaptation so that it worked for the medium and yet stayed truthful to the source, so I think I'm perfectly justified in stealing a little part of the pie for myself.
Hopefully this is just the start of big things to come. I'm still waiting for two big things projects to be decided and both of which have the possibility to do just as good as this, so 2011 could be an even bigger year than 2010...
But nobody can do this on their own so I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Tricia Pasternak my editor, Cliff Richards the amazing artist and of course Seth Graham Smith and Jane Austen because without them? I wouldn't be here today.
I'm off to lie down for a bit now :-)
