King of the Hill

I've been reading some books by Joe Hill. In 20th Century Ghosts, dysfunctional father/son relationships feature prominently in many of the short stories. Overall there's a horror theme, so I think that it's safe to say those relationships don't directly reflect the author's experience, beyond the idea that the relationship is important, so exploring different ways they can go wrong is a form of horror. Sometimes literally, in two different stories.

In the novel Horns, the other main theme of young people growing up and how their upbringing affects them comes to the fore, although it too is fairly strong in the above collection. It also explores a variant of a power that Firestarter's father had, and I wish had been further explored. So I welcomed it for that.

I like his work. It tends to be less visceral than that of his famous father, but still tells harrowing tales in a very readable way.
