What is art?*
"What an artist points to and calls 'art'."
Art is something in which an artist has found a meaning beyond the obvious, and invited others to look at with added attention to locate such a meaning. Sometimes the invitation is implicit to the object; something the artist has created, often with striking features that hope to draw the attention of the viewer to the potential for non-obvious meanings within it. Sometimes the invitation is contextual: by taking an object out of its normal context, and putting it in a context where art is normally placed in our culture.
