Night Angels

like Brent Week's Night Angel trilogy. Good characters, well-thought-out plots, interesting adventures. A writer who can describe the depths of despair and degradation, yet also humour and pure emotions. There's also a deliberate theme: a person can change. To change, a person adopts the manner and appearance of that the person wants or needs to be, and over time the man will become the mask. Yet there's always something there of the old person, within the new.

For a fantasy series about a wide land with many cultures (no monocultures here, nor orcs or elves) the series is intensely personal, character driven.
Constantly we see characters rise above monstrous circumstances to become more human, or reduced to monstrous acts due to circumstances.
