Cooler heads prevailed!

I am happy to report that all but one of our local elections went the way I wanted them to. The only proposal that did not go "my" way was the affirmative action proposal. I would be more concerned about this, except I did find out that it is very specifically written to only affect preferences in government employment and contracts, and college admissions. Also, it will not affect any federal programs that are administered at the state level. Since we now have a Democratic house and our wonderful Governor Granholm was re-elected (along with Senator Debbie Stabenow), they will hopefully keep things in check.

Here are results on the 5 proposals as reported by WZZM13, the local ABC affiliate.

Proposal 1: Conservation Fund (APPROVED)
5,154 of 5,681 precincts - 91 percent
x-Yes, 2,559,549 - 81 percent
No, 598,848 - 19 percent

Proposal 2: Affirmative Action (APPROVED)
5,154 of 5,681 precincts - 91 percent
x-Yes, 1,884,814 - 58 percent
No, 1,355,740 - 42 percent

Proposal 3: Dove Hunting (DENIED)
5,154 of 5,681 precincts - 91 percent
Yes, 1,022,158 - 32 percent
x-No, 2,204,163 - 68 percent

Proposal 4: Eminent Domain (APPROVED)
5,154 of 5,681 precincts - 91 percent
x-Yes, 2,562,728 - 80 percent
No, 633,021 - 20 percent

Proposal 5: School Funding (DENIED)
5,154 of 5,681 precincts - 91 percent
Yes, 1,203,602 - 38 percent
x-No, 1,985,511 - 62 percent

All in all, it was a good night. Of course, you can't deny the joy of now having a 32 person Democratic advantage in the House. And it is possible that we'll get the Senate, too. Even if Dems don't win both contested seats in the Senate, it's much more even now. Whew. OK, now that the whole deal is done with for the moment, I can concentrate on things like, oh, homework.
