Trevor

Despite losing the tickets (found them), and being snowed in from work on Wednesday, we made it to the Trevor Linden game. We ended up driving rather than taking transit so that we could drop the dog off at Greg's parents' place just in case we had a hard time getting home.

There are a bajillion posts about the ceremony and his career out there already, so I'll try to keep this on the short-side.

Trevor means a lot to many of us in this city, and he means a lot to me too. (obv...see username). It goes without saying that he was (and still is) wonderful, and I/we will all miss him terribly. As I watched the video recap of his hockey career, I thought about my own childhood and how I've grown up watching him play. Racing home from school to watch early games. Eating grapefruit and spitz (foods I deemed "lucky" at the time) during the '94 playoff run. Hockey Night in Canada with my dad as a little kid. Going to games as an 11 year old and yelling at Leafs fans. Booing refs. Dreaming of marrying a hockey player.

Even as a kid, I knew that he'd probably have to retire one day, but I've always wished, somehow, that he wouldn't. It was a childish wish that I've carried with me into adulthood. Somehow, he could play forever...or at least until they won a Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, neither of those things were true.

Even though I'd been dreading the day he retired, and would feel mixed emotions watching his number rise into the rafters as we all undoubtedly knew would happen one day, I am sooooo very happy, lucky, and honoured to have been able to watch it happen live, at GM Place, to be a part of history.

hockey, trevor
