Englishmen Abroad

English people always make a good impression abroad. If we’re not stubborn old men sitting in French restaurants demanding ‘cod and chips’ in English, then we seem to be a bunch of stupid drunk clubbers intent on turning pretty Greek islands into Essex and starting fights. No really, other countries must be simply in awe of us. Of course, it doesn’ ( Read more... )

'Mwah mwah mwah'

Is that three kisses, or a comedy trumpet noise implying misfortune?

Hehe, brilliant story.

Not sure if most countries are in awe regarding English tourists, but I so am. Like, in the south-eastern coast of Spain, which is where I live. There are some cities where you actually feel like a foreigner in the middle of so many "'Lo mate! y'right?" and "wie geht's?". That's just perfect, until some Brits' attitude happens to come across. It's so often that if they want to say something, no doubt it's gonna be in English and surely expecting a response in a perfectly articulated RP accent. If they don't get that, their "holy shit, why doesn't everyone learn English? Pfff. You can't talk, apologise!" face says it all. Luckily not everyone is like that, though.

next time I go somewhere I don’t speak the language, I’m going to make an effort to learn a lot more of the language first, or maybe take someone else with me who does.

I'm gonna make flyers of that and give it among cocky tourists :D

I have this picture in my head of you sitting on a bus, surrounded by kids running amok, looking really pleased with yourself. Oh that entry made me laugh!!!

I read this entry when I was at work... not a good idea as I started to giggle and laugh and everyone looked at me like I was going insane! You sound like you had one heck of an adventure. Crazy Brits! Crazy French!

After our in depth conversation about frogs and all such things at the weekend, none of this is a big supride to me!!!! Only a shame when you did get to the tapestry its was a let down!! I read a book about groupies once and there was this girl who spent years tryin' to sleep with David Bowie, years!!!, she built it up in her mind, compared all her other rock star conquests to what she thought he'd be like and tried so hard, then she finally made it, when some one asked her what it was like, she said "yeah it was ok, but it wasnt David Bowie"!!! I think theres a moral or a marble in this tale somewhere!!! x
