My cousin sent me a "Vote Petrelli" button Piece of Flair at Facebook. I am now, honest to God, seriously considering writing in Nathan Petrelli on by ballot come election day, or at least wearing a "Vote Petrelli" button to the polls, because I like him better than both candidates. Knowing fandoms, there's probably an active campaign for Petrelli; I imagine he could probably win a decent percentage of the third party vote if people write him in.
I didn't think I'd get to watch Heroes till tonight, but last night's episode had downloaded by the time I got home from choir rehearsal, and I was able to convince Mr. Tater to stay up and watch it on the pretense that I was wired from singing (which was true) and 40 minutes in front of the TV would help me wind down (which was definitely not true). Episode 3.5 was good enough that I laid awake till after midnight, dreamed about it all night, and then woke up too early this morning still thinking about it.
Before this season, I'd never really thought there was anything to Sylar's real name being Gabriel Gray. A psychopathic serial killer named for the Angel of the Lord: ironic. But his recent story arc seems to be undermining the irony and going for something much more literal. Sylar was clearly the angel of episode 3.5, living up to the name Gabriel. Even so, it's not a clear-cut case of black and white -- Gabriel's morality certainly works itself out in shades of gray.
Sylar may be learning to curb the hunger for other people's powers, but he seems instead to be feeding a hunger for family connections. He's referring to Angela Petrelli as "my mother" now, and obviously trying very hard to please her. The fangirl in me loved that he got a heroic moment last night of protecting her from Peter, but are Sylar's motives really pure? As Peter loses himself to the power he took from Sylar, is Sylar jockeying for position within the Petrelli family? With Peter in a coma because he can't control himself, and Nathan now turned against Angela for allowing him to be genetically altered, it's a likely scenario that Sylar will become the son Angela depends on most. Especially since he can't die and is probably their best bet for defeating Papa Petrelli?
More obvious is the way he wedges himself between Claire and HRG -- on the one hand, he seems to be talking good sense, but then was that telling smirk after Claire and HRG got out of the car. (God, it was good to see Sylar put HRG in his place; normally I love HRG, but he was a real ass! And maybe understandably, so, but...come on, why isn't he a Sylar fanboy?) What's Sylar's motive here? (Besides revenge on HRG for the plot to murder Sylar.) His he again trying to win a family member (his niece) over to his side?
This continues to be my favorite story arc of this season, and, IMO, it's the best character development arc of the series. The dynamic between Sylar and HRG crackles. I loved Sylar being so pissy when they were driving out to Vortex Dude's house, munching an apple and flicking through the radio stations and moaning about how reform doesn't happen overnight. He's like a petulant teenager, lol. And it's really clever the way they're highlighting HRG's continually gray morality through someone like Sylar. Nathan thinks he's been hearing the Voice of God, but he'd probably be better served listening to Gabriel...
Other points:
- Am I getting my hopes up too much that Maya is really dead? She's certainly no credit to evolution by not killing Spider-Mohinder when she had the chance and surviving. They already faked us out once last season with a Maya death; surely she won't pull through a second time? I was cheering when she called Mohinder a monster and he menacingly said he wished she hadn't said that. And then when we saw her all spun up in a web. Favorite Maya scene, ever. ;)
- Wasn't sure how I felt about the Mohinder arc, but I've been re-watching season one this week, and in light of all the issues he had with Chandra and being shadowed by Shanti, I think it fits that he'd do something that stupid, almost as if he thought he could be special enough for his father even from beyond the grave.
- So Daphne's going to be recruiting Matt! That's going to be interesting to see. She's so cute, I can't wait to see them hook up.
- I really love Nathan and Tracy, especially teamed up as they are to expose the Company.
- WTF? Hiro killed Ando? I love Ando! Does Hiro think he's going to travel back in time and save Ando? Or is he just trying to stop Ando's future betrayal? If Ando does make it out of this alive, I can understand why he'd want to be injected with super powers!
- Who all has been born with powers, and who all was injected with them? I've got a theory about Elle as one of the made mutants, but I don't want to say much about that, because I think it may just appear in an upcoming fic...
So much more I want to discuss, but I've got to get to work now. No doubt I'll say much more in any ensuing chatter. :)
Can it be next Monday already??
