New R/T Fic: Jumping the Broom

Aug 12, 2007 08:34

Today's rt_challenge prompt, courtesy of scarlett71177, gave me the chance to write a fic I've wanted to for a very long time, inspired by one of my favorite Loreena McKennitt songs which struck me as very much like the sort of wedding vows Tonks and Remus would make to one another. Actually, I'd thought it would be my inspiration for the wedding in "Masks and Mirrors", but it hit me differently after reading Deathly Hallows so I've worked it into "Caring For Magical Creatures" 'verse instead. Anyway, if you're looking for a Sunday afternoon read, here's a link to the first part. I think there will be five all told, and thank goodness they're turning out less than half the length of the "Serpents" chapters.

Title: Jumping the Broom (1/5)
Author: MrsTater
Format & Word Count: WIP, 4111
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: #12: Never-Ending Road, by Loreena McKennitt (lyrics beneath the cut)
Warnings: paganism, language, original character
Summary: Newly engaged to Remus, Tonks finds the path to the altar fraught with more complications than she imagined. Particularly in the way of friends and family...
Author's Note: Another leap into the future in my Caring For Magical Creatures 'verse, but all you really need to know is that it operates under the premise that Remus and Tonks first met during POA, when Tonks was on assignment during her final year of training, and it's been a bumpy ride for them over the years, to put it mildly. Many thanks to Godricgal for beta-reading.

In other news, the office ceiling fan and our AC have decided to malfunction simultaneously! It was 88 degrees out at midnight last night, and not much cooler in the house. Made sleeping a bit difficult last night, and I fully blame the weird temperature fluctuations as the AC struggled to work on my bizarre dream about Mr. Tater and me chasing a couple of rats through our house, catching them, and trying to figure out which one was Peter Pettigrew so we could dispose of him permanently! We were trying to call Sirius and Remus (Who you gonna call? Ratbusters!) but we didn't have Patronuses, so this was a problem! We also couldn't perform the charm to turn Peter back into a person, and before we could solve either that problem or the communication one, I was awakened by Dorrie meowing loudly outside the bedroom door. Though I guess it would have been the best solution: just let Dorrie eat Mr. Pettigrew. (She tried to eat a baby gecko the other night, and did not like it. I can't imagine Peter being terribly tasty.)

We're going to escape the sweltering heat of the day (the high today is 102, and already it's 82 with a heat index of 88 -- yuck!) by going to see The Bourne Ultimatum. I'd never seen the other two Bourne movies before this weekend, owing to making out with being distracted by then-new boyfriend Mr. Tater and missing half of it, and falling asleep the next time we tried to watch it. I like them! And I can't believe Matt Damon is nearly thirty-seven!

Hope everyone's having a lovely weekend.
