Title: Lipstick
By:
mrssjwRating: PG (kissing ahead... if that makes you uncomfy, then you're in the wrong fandom)
Characters: Gwen, Ianto, Jack
Length: Short Story
Spoliers: Very slight ones for "Day in the Death" but not really... could be overlooked, and no plot spoilers at all... just a name really. However, if you haven't seen "Reset" then some of the humorous undertones will be lost on you.
Summary: Gwen has a new lipstick... and if I say too much more, it would give it all away!
A/N: I have another little one-shot fic of Gwen and Ianto. I haven't posted it yet, but just so you know, they end up talking about how Gwen likes to things in complete sets. There's a ** marking this phrase for that reason. It's so you know that's what she's referring to. (I know, this probably makes no sense at all, but it will make more sense after you read both fics, and see what I mean.)
LIPSTICK
“What’s with the lipstick?” Ianto asked. Gwen quickly lowered her hand, guiltily putting way the small tube of lip color.
“Oh, I don’t know. I just thought it might look nice.” She hedged, and Ianto raised an eyebrow at her. She flushed pink.
“Are you going out on the pull tonight?”
“Of course not!” Gwen laughed nervously. “What would make you think that?” Ianto shrugged, leaning a hip against her desk.
“It’s a rather… bright shade. I just figured you must have a reason.” Gwen pressed her lips together, then gave up trying to hide it, and showed Ianto the tube she held.
‘Kiss Me Quick’
“Quite a color name. So, who is it that you want to have kiss you then?” he asked, nonchalantly. Gwen blushed a deeper pink.
“No one. I was just trying it on to see how it looked, that’s all.” She tried to take the lipstick back from him, but he held it firmly out of her reach.
She would have to lunge for it, and that would draw too much attention to them. The last thing she needed was for Owen, or Tosh, or (God help her) Jack to see what she was up to.
“Come on, there’s got to be a reason. Who are you trying to tempt?” He teased. She mumbled something under her breath, and Ianto had to lean closer for him to hear her.
“What was that, Gwennie?”
“You,” she sighed, exasperatedly. Taken aback, Ianto straightened. Then he laughed, realizing she must be joking. Yet she didn’t laugh along with him. She just continued to sit there in her chair, staring down at her hands.
“What?” He said, shaking his head. Maybe he just hadn’t heard her correctly. The look she gave him filled him with dread.
“Never mind, I was just being silly.”
“Why me?” he asked, then wished he could bite his tongue off.
“Well…” she began uncertainly, “It’s more of a curiosity thing. I mean, you’re such a handsome bloke, and I was sort of wondering what it would be like.”
“Is this because you’ve kissed every other bloke in Torchwood, and you feel like you need to complete your set?”*
“What? No, of course not!"
“Then, what-”
A loud crash, followed by the sound of Owen’s stream of obscenities came from the region of the coffee machine. Ianto looked over with a worried expression. Owen and the espresso machine shouldn’t be left alone without proper adult supervision.
“Gwen, could I have a word?” Jack’s voice came over the loud speaker, and Gwen sighed.
She pushed back from her desk, and Ianto let her pass by without further comment. He was busy thinking hard anyway. Musing over this strange behavior in Gwen, he returned to find out how much damage Owen had caused this time.

“Nice color, you going out tonight?” Jack asked without looking up when Gwen entered his office.
“What is wrong with this color?” she muttered, more to herself, but she had forgotten about Jack’s superhuman hearing.
“There’s nothing wrong with it… it’s just a bit bright for wearing on a regular basis…unless you’re a prostitute, of course.”
“Jack!” Gwen cried, scandalized, and offended by his comment. He chuckled.
“Gwen, you would be the worst prostitute ever. You are still shocked entirely too easily.”
“Fine, whatever…what did you want to see me for?” She crossed her arms over her chest. Jack shuffled around a pile of paper on his desk.
“Right… about that last inspection of Parker’s house…”

“G’night Tosh, See you Owen!” Gwen called after them as they left.
She was happy to see them walking together, because it meant that they weren’t ripping the mickey out of her for her lip wear. After leaving Jack’s office, it had suddenly become busy with small fits of Rift activity, and she had never gotten the chance to sneak away and rinse it off properly. Gwen sighed, and finished gathering up her stuff. She was going to go home, and rest.
"Have a good night, Gwen.” Jack called, and she smiled up at him.
“Thanks Jack. You too. See you in the morning."
She picked up her purse, and made her way up to the Reception area. Ianto had his back turned in her direction when she got there, and she tried to sneak past him, and make it through the door to the relative safety of her car before he realized she was there.
“Did you want this back?” he asked, turning to her, and holding out the tube of lipstick she’d forgotten he still had.
“Nah, that’s all right. I don’t think it’s really my color.” Gwen tried to laugh it off, and got as far as three steps from the door, when she felt the hand on her elbow.
“Gwen,” Ianto was there, right next to her, looking at her with amused eyes. “I’m not going to bite you.”
"I know that,” she muttered; too embarrassed by her earlier admission still to look him in the eye completely. He sighed.
“Do you need to get this out of your system?”
“What?”
“Whatever this thing is? I have my own suspicions, but I’m sure they’re not the same as your reasoning.”
“Oh…that…”
“Yes, that… do you know what I think?”
“That’ I’m absolutely insane, and should hand in my security pass and go on and head home for the night?” She asked hopefully, and he chuckled, shaking his head.
“No, I think you’re curious as to what it is about me that attracts Jack so wholly.”
“You what?” Gwen asked, astonished… Had she really been that transparent? The expression other face must have told Ianto he was right, because he gave her a small smirk.
“Gwen, all you had to do was ask.” And then he did the most astonishing thing yet.
He leaned in and kissed her.
Gently, non-threateningly, but with enough power for her to stumble back after the few seconds it lasted. Ianto grinned, and Gwen raised her eyebrows, eyes wide. She pressed her lips together, holding them like that for a second or two, before commenting.
“Wow…okay, thanks Ianto. I think that clears that up.”
“Always happy to be of help. Good night, Gwennie.” He opened the door for her and stood back. She grinned back at him, relieved that they were back on their even playing field.
"G’night Ianto.”

Jack sat in his office, watching the exchange between his two team embers with interest. There was an element of true friendship there, and he was glad to see it, but did they both have to be so cute about it?
Jack shook his head, and switched off the CCTV feed when he realized that Ianto was heading back into the Hub. Moments later, the Welshman was at the door to Jack’s office, leaning casually against it, looking for the entire world the epitome of the relaxed man. Jack pretended not to notice, but couldn’t resist commenting,
“You know, Ianto, red is your color, but I’m not sure that’s quite what you meant.”
Jack chuckled as Ianto lifted a hand to his mouth, and it came away with traces of red from Gwen’s lipstick.
“Next time,” Jack called after him, as Ianto went in search of some tissue to wipe his lips, “Make sure she blots!”
