So recently, our young buck of a music pastor left our church. I was bummed for about a week or so, and during that time I pondered all of the great things I learned from him. I ended up with seven key points. Some are trivial, some are more profound…all of them are lessons learned, and now I’m going to share them with you!
1) COMMUNAL DINING IS OKAY!
You will not die if you share someone’s food and/or beverage, so go ahead! Or risk missing out on some fantabulous consumables…and great memories. Which leads me to…
2) ORANGE CREAM COOLERS ARE A GIFT FROM GOD
Sure they’re a buck extra, but those dreamsicle shakes at Olga’s are worth it! It’s okay to splurge on yourself from time to time.
3) EVERYONE HAS A MINISTRY
Everyone has a calling from God on their life, whether it’s from the pulpit, the preschool, or the Pizza Hut. This works two ways. We as laypeople should be called to live a Godly life, and serve God in all we say and do. At the same time, expecting pastors to be held to a higher standard of living is ludicrous. Being pastors is their JOB…just as your job is your job. So live as you think a pastor should live, and don’t be judgmental and condescending when pastors act like…well…you.
4) SERVICE SHOULD BE TO GOD, NOT MAN
If you’re doing something to please and win over a pastor and not for God, you may need to re-evaluate why you’re attending the church you’re at, as well as your Spiritual walk. Sure, it’s great to help people, but if you leave a church because a certain pastor leaves, or deny yourself the experience of being on a ministry team “because you don’t like the pastor or the other people involved” only shows that your focus wasn’t where it needed to be in the first place. Let God use you anyway!
5) EVEN PASTORS WILL LET YOU DOWN, BUT GOD WILL NEVER FAIL YOU
As I said earlier, pastors are human; they can, will, and DO screw up; it’s to be expected. They sometimes say things that may be hurtful. They leave with no explanation. In these instances, hang on to God. I promise He will carry you through.
6) I’M NOT A CRAPPY KEYBOARD PLAYER
Give people a chance to show what they can do…their abilities might blow your mind! Your greatest asset, your greatest friend, your greatest ABILITY even, may very well be right under your nose.
7) SCREW CHURCH PEOPLE
Here’s the deal: A certain percentage of regular churchgoers are nosy, gossipy, back-stabbing whatchamawhozits. Don’t sweat ‘em. God has a tendency to bring ugliness to light. Don’t let these people dictate what you can and cannot be a part of in your local church. If God wants you to be involved, he’ll give you the strength and the wisdom to deal. Smile. Compliment their shoes-it’s like a holy middle finger. It’s great!!!
This is just a random jotting down of some of the thoughts I’ve had over the past few
months. Take it or leave it. Comment if you’d like. This is just my pea-brained take on
some stuff.
