Uninvited Dinner Guests

Everyone has had an uninvited dinner guest at one time or another and if you haven't yet you will . It is inevitable or at least it seems that way. Its so awkward and rude when people show up by surprise and impose themselves upon you. You know that the visit is their way of trying to score a free meal on you. How rude!

When I was growing up it was considered rude to do such a thing. We didn't show up unannounced unless you were surprising someone for a special reason. We called and asked permission to come over. We  didn't show up empty handed and we certainly did not stick around for dinner! When asked if you wanted to stay you politely decline especially if you know it is a imposition and they are simply offering to not be rude to you.

Over the years I have come to notice that etiquette no longer seems to be practiced. Its as if that somehow has become an antiquated notion to be considerate of another. I had a friend of mine which never leaves her children at home are in their late teens. She acts as if they are little children who need special attention and supervision. Truthfully its tiresome.

This friend of mine asked to babysit so that she could go on a date and I agreed. After she shows up we chat for a bit and I tried to get rid of them but they just made themselves comfortable and wouldn't leave. I began cooking and mentioned how it would be a long time before it would be done so they would leave and they just kept saying how it smelled great and they couldn't wait to eat.

They stuck around and waited hours for the food and then left as soon as they finished eating. My spouse and I would normally just ask them to leave bluntly but our young children were present and it was not something we wanted to explain we found that they put us in a distasteful position.
