I really liked Capaldi on first encounter. Also, I reallllly loved Matt Smith's final episode, in spite of having watched almost none of his other episodes (yet).

You're definitely in a minority there! I did not like his last episode at all. I thought he had deserved a better ending. Then again there are some things I don't like about Ten's good-bye either.

In general I did not like the last few episodes of season 7, I thought they were confusing and boring. Moffat has tangled himself in a web of twists and re-sets and I had no idea what was true anymore.

The 50th anniversary was awesome though and I also was very entertained by the new Doctor.

I didn't enjoy the back half of season 7 as much, but I had a really hard time letting go of Amy and Rory so I assumed that was my problem! I actually considered taking a mini-hiatus there to cope, lol. Instead I just read a whole bunch of 'and then Amy and Rory live happily ever after' fic to console myself.

I had no idea what was true anymore

Yeah, I can definitely understand that point of view!

Are you up to date with recent episodes? I am really glad they are back to the stand alone episodes, where the problem gets solved in the end. There is a bigger story in the background, but you can watch each episode on their own. In seasons 6 and 7, they all were just one big story arc and you can't just watch one episode without the others.

I am definitely going to at least watch Matt Smith's last ep soon. General opinion about Capaldi seems to be positive so I'm starting to feel more motivated! :)

The plot not so much. :P

Eh, well. At least that sets my expectations appropriately!

I hope you enjoy both! I thought the plot of Deep Breath had no more than the usual amount of handwavium (and no less, either), and a good strong atmosphere. For every line or event or detail that one commenter picked out as a Bad Thing, there was someone else who liked that particular line or event or detail.

It really is carried by Capaldi's own strengths, and the strength of the cast overall. That's a big part of why I liked it: it didn't run on breathless action or loud crashes or big effects. I enjoyed the different pace.

I'm honestly mystified by Astra's comment about being in a minority on Matt Smith's finale. At least on my own flist, the overall reaction was positive, although nobody was entirely satisfied -- it's a fandom in which nobody can be entirely satisfied, after all. Admittedly, it helps that I generally like Moffat's writing style, and I don't mind his particular foibles.

Suspension of disbelief is sort of the ticket to walk in the door, lol. As long as it's not revisiting Adipose Industries I'm usually good! Ha.

I am mostly in this camp with you. I mean, I get what it is about his choices that bothers some people, and I respect that, but it just doesn't bug me as much. Part of the charm has always been that the show reinvents itself periodically, anyway - though occasionally I have to remind myself that that's charming and not the end of the universe I will never be able to watch this show again because Tennant left. *g*

*toedirt* Um . . . actually, the reason I haven't seen much of the Eleven era was because I went off and sulked after Tennant left, and didn't come back until last fall, when the anniversary excitement sucked me in. With all my other interests, I still haven't caught more than an odd episode here and there -- mostly Christmas specials, as it happens. I've really liked what I've seen, but have stayed largely clear of the tangled story arcs.

As for DW Producer Hate, I went through that with John Nathan-Turner, and Matthew Jacobs got what was left. Moffat's nothing to that!

Hahaha! Always glad to know I am not the only one.
