"You know, it's times like these I think maybe I should get a regular boring job, settle down with a guy who sells insurance and have two-point-four kids."

Clark gave Lois an incredulous look and joined her in an emphatic "Nah!" as they both broke into grins. She reached out and touched his arm, a quiet voice in the back of her brain noting the warmth of his skin. She quickly pulled back and glanced at Lex in the ambulance.

"Well, I guess I should ride with Lex..." She took a moment to study his face before turning away.

"Lois." She turned back toward him. "Be careful with Lex. You don't know him like I do."

Lois' heart jumped in her chest and a shaft of crystal clarity pierced her, like a lightning bolt in its speed and brightness.

"We were supposed to go to Madame Butterfly." "Ten minutes, I'll be ten minutes..."

"If that is a hair trigger under his finger, it could go off before I could stop it and I can't take that risk."

"Now that we know what kind of stuff Mr. Kent is made of..."

"From what I've heard, I'd be better off out there with the cops on my tail than you, Mr. Luthor."

Perhaps neither of the two men in her life were what they seemed.

But then, just as quickly as it had come, the moment of clarity faded away, and she remembered that they were indeed, just what they seemed - a naïve farm boy and a handsome philanthropist.

"Can't buy brown eyes..."

Clark was jealous. That was all.

She turned her back to him and walked away.
