Hallelujah!
It’s Raining Money!
Hey, all you commies!
Put down those umbrellas of ignorance! Take off that rain slicker of misguided economy theory! Allow yourself to be showered in the manna from heaven that is
trickle down economics!
Come on! Hold your arms out and point your face to the sky!
You feel it?
Not yet?
Okay… um… give it sec…
How about now?
Still nothing?
Maybe something’s blocking all the trickle. Let me check…
Oh wait… here it is: Apparently that line of thinking is
clogged with bullshit. So in the decades since Reagan first assaulted the economy with this mumbo jumbo, the rich have just gotten richer and the poor have just gotten poorer? Seems that the wealthiest 20 percent of households in 1973 held 44 percent of total U.S. income and now they have 50 percent. Meanwhile, the bottom 20 percent has seen its slice of the pie drop from 4.2 percent to 3.5 percent in that same time period. Damn! So this economic cure-all based on giving tax breaks to the rich in the hope that they might reinvest that money into the U.S. economy and improve overall incomes was just a bunch of snakeoil? Who the hell would have thunk it?
I mean it sounded great… All of these nice, well-meaning rich people that feel a deep need to reinvest their profits in the economy. It’s the right thing to do for society! Oh wait… the rich like being rich? In fact, the one thing they like more than being rich is being even richer? Goddamn, how could we have been so blind?
But wait… wait… People must have felt some trickledown. I mean, Dubya gave all of those tax breaks and we have seen the return of one million of the 2.6 million jobs lost since he took office. See? It’s working!
Um… hold on... Oh, I guess those jobs are concentrated in health care, food services and temp service (which accounts for one-fifth of all new jobs), so they pay less and offer fewer benefits.
Dammit! Where’s my trickle? Anybody know a good plumber?
