The Power of Women

One need not look further past the words of an aspiring poet when he says “Power over myself and men, second to only that of God” about women to realize how much they affect men. Countless of songs and poems have been written, words documented and even wars started over women so it is no surprise that even though men rule the world, women run it. I give away no deep, dark secret when I state that we men are visual beings. We need the picture drawn to get the point, which is why God the Artist brought to life the most beautiful artwork man could never imagine or recreate: women.

Sadly, just as pollution perverts the environment, sin has come to pervert the way men view women and the world has cashed in on this. Businesses and corporations have noticed that sex sells and have not stopped short of pushing the envelope to see how far they can go to get the dollar. Ads have women promoting their product in tight or revealing outfits; movie trailers make sure to get some skin in their short running time; TV shows starlets’ outfits always accent their body parts even if they are homemakers and this is what dictates the fashion of the day. Girls are more and more dressing provocatively without noticing it because of what is accepted as the norm.

Alarmingly enough, this trend has not evaded the Christian community. Just this past summer it came to my attention while at the Staff Training Conference how short some of the girls’ shorts were and how tight or revealing shirts or tank tops were. And these concerns were not just with the older teen-agers or the ladies in their twenties; this was going on with some of the kids in childcare who were not past the 6th grade. Now, I was a boy in the 6th grade once and I knew that even if I didn’t know much about girls, the way they looked when they wore tighter or less clothing was attractive.

What I am trying to say is not that girls and women are loose or careless but rather that men are no saints and the devil exploits our weaknesses. We, as brothers and sisters in Christ, cannot afford to stop building each other up. Women should not take for granted the effect their looks have on men and men should not stand by complacent to what is accepted as the “norm” of the day.
