I went to the bookstore to return my books. I set them down on the counter. "AU ID?" "I don't have it." "You need an AU ID to sell the books back." "But I can give you a receipt showing I bought them here." "You need an AU ID to sell books back." "I can give you my AU ID number and my social security number and you can match them online." "You need an AU ID to sell books back." "Where do I go to get a replacement?" "Public safety."
Go to public safety. "I need a replacement ID." "Oh, we don't do that here." "Where do I go?" "I don't know. Say ____, do you know?" "No." (me-)"Does anybody here know?" No. I stare at him for a second and he finally picks up the phone and makes a call. "Hughes hall."
Go to Hughes. "I need a replacement ID." "On-campus or off-campus?" "Off." "We can't print yours until Monday." "Why not?" "Because off-campus ID's don't have colors around the picture and there's a glitch not allowing us to print out ID's without colors around the picture." (Side note: AU ID's have different colors around each picture for different dorms. However, you can not swipe your card to get into the dorm without being coded for that dorm, meaning that whether or not there was a color around my picture was completely meaningless.) "But they won't let me sell my books back without it." "Do you really need to buy books?" "Yes, I start class after this weekend." "Couldn't you sell the books back later?" "No, I need the money from selling them back to pay for my new books." I stare at her for a second and she finally says, "Well, we'll give you a temporary ID and have public safety escort you to the library. Then after you've shown it to them you can give it to him and you should be all set." "OK, thank you."
Go back to bookstore. "Here you go." He types the seven numbers of my ID - that.was.all. "Will I need my ID when I purchase books later?" "No, just during buyback." "OK." I hand the public safety guy my ID and thank him. I get my receipt, gather up my new books, and head to the register. I put my books and the buyback credit receipt on the counter.
