Took me two and a half hours (plus all the times before), but I FINALLY learned how to stop on my left foot (ice skating). And at a pretty fast speed too. Skating without gloves and a stick is always so weird though, eh? Phil Esposito said he never once skated without a stick and probably wouldn't be able to skate without one ( Read more... )

Play ice... no contest. Roller's okay, but what makes hockey so special is the fact that you're playing on ice. If you have a chance to play on ice, you should do it... there are so many good leagues and house-leagues and stuff in this area... and everyone's really nice. Ice, ice, baby.

Ice is cool and all but roller's more fun, maybe partly because I am SO MUCH BETTER at roller than I am at ice... I dunno, roller is just pure offense, and it's fun.

But you're not on the ice! And you can't have sliding races!

Maybe part of me is still bitter my parents weren't willing to spend money on ice hockey equipment growing up? (But a $4,000 viola = completely fine)

You so don't strike me as a viola player...

My sister got the viola. Heh. Maybe I am a bitter person! You can scrounge up hockey equipment for $300-400 but they never wanted to.

You totally can. I remember my very first pair of gloves ever were a used pair of old Coopers... $5! Most of the leather on the palms had worn down and they couldn't really protect against a fly landing on your hands, but I loved those gloves. Even when I got nicer gloves, I refused to part with my old ones... they're still floating around in my bag, "in case of emergencies."

I got most of my hockey equipment from hockeygiant.com and got a pair of pants used at The Hockey Stop - they're WAY too big and I believe are Women's but hey, they work. I think I spent around $350 total for 90% new stuff.
