I'm entirely and completely tired (and sunburnt) from Warped yesterday Tuesday, but while I'm here catching up on what I missed on the ever-present internet, I'll post what I wrote in my journal this morning and last night:
btw, "we" refers to Shannon, Erin, and I.
When we first got in, we went to see All Time Low for a couple minutes, just standing on the edge of the crowd because we're not really big fans of them. Then we bought a couple shirts and merch then went to see Cinematic Sunrise at Shannon's insistent request.[while waiting for them to set up, we saw Matt, the bassist of Chiodos walking behind where we were seated and Shannon contemplated saying hi, but didn't in the end]The crowd wasn't too big, thankfully, so we got pretty close and Craig did amazing and told us not to be embarassed to dance and clap and to keep smiling. [which he was doing the entire time...they said it was their fifth show ever and first time on Warped Tour, so I guess they were all pretty excited about it]Someone threw a little stuffed penguin to Craig and he said "See? This is how I feel right now. Like this cute little penguin." which we all thought was hillarious. After they finished, we stayed for Scary Kids Scaring Kids thinking they would play "My Darkest Hour" first so we could go see Cute Is What We Aim For for Erin...Turns out they played it last (of course) so ERin and Shannon didn't get to see CIWWAF, but they didn't seem to mind anyway. After SKSK, we went to the Cinematic Sunrise tent to get them to sign Shannon's shirt for her. we ended up all getting signed CDs (considering they were free and the band was right there) and Shannon and I ended up getting a picture with Craig. (He has such a pretty smile, by the way).
Thennnn it was time for Circa Survive.
Um, wow?
From what I can remember, they played:
"In The Morning And Amazing"
"The Different Between Medicine..."
"In Fear and Faith"
"On Letting Go"
"Holding Someone's Hair Back"
"Act Appalled"
"Living Together"
Who knew that people would get so riled up over Circa Survive? I got kicked in the head/landed on/pushed from all the crowd surfing and from the pit expanding so suddenly (at one point, Anthony told them to make a triangular pit haha). My glasses almost fell off twice, and sometimes it was a bit difficult to concentrate on singing along...but still, it was great. Anthony's both hillarious and mesmerizing at the same time. Also, just before they played, some shirtless asshole pushed through and stood in front of me the whole time so I was trying not to touch his back because...well...ew. He was funny to watch though because he was dancing so awkwardly.
Then we went to buy more merch and to rest and whatnot before Red Jumpsuit Apparatus played. We ended up resting for much longer than planned and therefore only saw the end of their set. Erin was the one who'd wanted to see them and she seemed satisfied either way. We stayed there so Shannon could see New Found Glory and then after that for Chiodos. Chiodos was obviously becoming a repeat of Circa Surve, except 5 times as rowdy but we managed to get out after "The Word 'Best Friend' Redefined" so it wasn't that long. For the rest of their set, we stood on the side of the stage which was just as close, but you could actually see and could y'know, keep your balance the entire time. During one of their new songs, some guys from the front held Craig up by the ankles which I found kind of funny because he actually has surprisingly good balance. We went to get some merch or something and then I went to see the Automatic Automatic by myself while Erin and Shannon stayed to watch Paramore. It was weird because I could see Rob and Frost talking before they went on backstage and then Pennie appeared shorotly after Iwan. I considered waving to them, but was kind of shy, so I didn't. Now I wish I had, but whatever. It was nice just...staring, haha. I was the first to get there for them so I ended up being right against the barricade under Rob's mic - front and center.
Their set was:
"That's What She Said" <-- I'm pretty sure, since it was the only song I hadn't heard before
"On the Campaign Trail"
"By My Side"
"Raoul"
"You Shout You Shout You Shout You Shout"
"Golddigger"
"Monster"
"Recover"
OH MY GOD. They were soooo fucking good live (to say the least). Pennie got up on the speakers a lot, but that was nothing compared to when he jumped off the stage, climbed over the barricade (using me to help him over) and stood in the crowd and sang. He then did it again during "Golddigger" which, yes, I knew they did live but had no idea who did what. And guess what? PENNIE FUCKING RAPS. He was amazing too - which was a little bit ironic because he was wearing a Beastie Boys shirt hahaha. [Also, I nearly died from laughter at Rob's odd but endearing gyrating as he played the melody on the flute.] Not only did he get in the crowd, but he stood beside me for a while then climbed up on the barricade and fucking sat on it. Sat in front of me. As in, I was looking up at like, the drops of sweat from his hair and the muscles in his jaw clencing. I took like 8 pics too, one of which was particularly AMAZING. I still can't believe I was that close.
That performance was definitely my favorite of the whole day. Funny thing was, I seemed to be the biggest fan there. I was the only person that could actually sing along to all the songs, and I wasn't surprised when they did Golddigger. Also, at the singing, the other people that waited with us had to ask what their names were and where they were from and such. Speaking of which, after their set, we waited at their tent for about 20 minutes [through Bad Religion's set and Coheed and Cambria's, which now that I think of it was more like 45 minutes that we were waiting for the guys to show up] with about five other people who Erin says were most likely from Russia. (We got like 19 million of the stickers that had blown off the table onto the pavement too.) When they finally made it, it was just Rob and Frost, but I was excited anyway. Everyone made to stand up but they said no and sat down with us in a circle, Rob sitting beside moi. :D
I was being a little shy though because y'know...he's Rob. But after we all had a laugh at Frost sitting in the middle and saying "This is the best signing ever!" he turned to me and asked how my day had been so far. I said that it'd been great so far, especially after they played because they were basically the entire reason I came to Wareped and he very politely said "Thanks"...and by the way, Rob seemed very soft-spoken which made me feel both nervous and at ease (nervous because I didn't want to seem too...aggressive and because it made him even more tangible than before and therefore a teensy bit intimidating and relaxed because I didn't feel like I was talking to 'Rob the lead singer' anymore and I'm much the same way). I do wish I had asked him how his day was or what he thought of the US, but I went for asking him to sign my CD instead...ah well, he took the CD and upon opening it broke off the cover.
[I'm assuming, considering I turned to show Erin how to work my camera and when I turned back, he was fumbling with the two pieces and looking extremely confused.]
I waited patiently for him to put it back together, but he didn't seem to know how so I carefully took it from him while he signed the CD and fixed it. He thanked me (once again, very politely) and said "you probably think I don't know what I'm doing" (or something along those lines) but I was like "nah, it's fine" with a huge-ass smile on my face. he left it in his lap though while he was signing some other girl's CD so when Frost turned to us (brightly saying "hello!"), I didn't have anything for him to sign. I was like "Um...he's got it," pointing at Rob, but I don't he heard me, so after a moment, I just reached over and took the gatefold from Rob's lap (trying not to be too intrusive because he was sitting indian style and it was practically between his legs) and gave it to Frost to sign. (He signed in a big green expo marker because by the time Rob tunred to me and asked "oh, isn't this your pen?" he'd already wrote the first letter.)
After Frost was done, everyone stood up so I waited for a while longer to get a picture with them both. I would have liked to hang for a while longer, but Erin and Shannon wanted to see Underoath, so we ent to see them. A while later, Shannon's mom wanted to leave 'cause it was already around 8:00 but I still hadn't seen Pennie anywhere, so we went and looked for him around the tent. The only person there however was - luckily - Iwan, who (if I'm not mistaken) seemed a bit surprised that I recognized him when I asked for a picture. [Totally didn't remember to ask him to sign the CD, but oh well]. I asked him where Pennie was and he scratched his head and said that he had no idea and I said "Oh," and almost walked away, but then said "seems like no one knows where Pennie went," and we both laughed. I wish I had said "Nice to meet you," and shook his hand - because it seriously was AMAZING to just see him there without having to wait to talk to him - but apparently the entire experience of meeting them had completely fried my brain. We never did see Pennie after searching for something like 30 minutes so we ended up just calling it a day and leaving.
I was a little bummed at first because I would have liked to meet everyone in the band...but y'know, that's fine. I mean, who am I to complain after getting such an amazing performance from them (and Circa Survive, Chiodos, and all the other bands I saw) and having Pennie be what, 3 centimeters from my face? Ahhh you guys. I seriously don't have words for how awesome it ended up being.
edit: Also, I watched The Sauce yesterday with TAA and from what I heard, I think Pennie might have still been sick on Tuesday when we saw them. If that's true, then I am completely blown away and inspired by the performance he (and all of them, considering hey! they're in a foreign country too) gave. fuckin' sweet.
