It looks like shit and it must be America

This one time Scott posted a fanmix made entirely of Blink-182 songs. I've been wanting to do a one-artist fanmix since then, but I couldn't find a combination that grabbed me enough. But last night I watched Back to the Future Part II for the first time in approximately forever, and this morning on the bus I was listening to Exile in Guyville, and then.... this happened.

It looks like shit and it must be America: A 1985A Lorraine Baines-McFly-Tannen fanmix

In Back to the Future Part II, 1985A is the alternate timeline where (due to time travel shenanigans) Biff Tannen becomes the richest man in America, has George McFly murdered, and marries Lorraine Baines-McFly. Biff is emotionally abusive, coercing Lorraine into getting unwanted plastic surgery, and threatening her kids if she leaves him. As in the original 1985, Lorraine is an alcoholic. Word-of-God says that a few years after we see her (approximately 1990A) Lorraine gives up and shoots Biff.

LITTLE DIGGER:

I've done the damage, the damage is done
I pray to God that I'm the damaged one
In all these grown-up complications that you don't understand
I hope you can, someday
I hope you can

And now you're thinking little thoughts about it
Taking every inch of him in
What does it mean when something changes how it's always been?
And in your head you keep repeating the line
My mother is mine

HOW PERFECT IS THIS SONG?? Parents making bad, necessary decisions, “something changes how it's always been”, a dash of Oedipus. Yes.

6'1”:

I bet you fall in bed too easily
With the beautiful girls who are shyly brave
And you sell yourself as a man to save
But all the money in the world is not enough

“I wouldn't be your girl if you had a million dollars!”

SHITLOADS OF MONEY:

It's nice to be liked
But it's better by far to get paid
I know that most of the friends that I have don't really see it
That way/But if you could give 'em each one wish
How much do you wanna bet?
They'd wish success for themselves and their friends and that would include lots of money

...In here purely for the contrast. Oh, Lorraine, honey.

CANARY:

I clean the house
I put all your books in an order
I make up a colorful border
I clean my mouth
'Cause froth comes out

Send it up on fire
Death before dawn

Her delivery on this song has this... I don't know how to describe it, this thinly-veiled rage waiting to burst out, coupled with a heavy dose of self-deprecation. It fits with Lorraine, who goes from “You're not half the man George was” to apologetically making excuses for him in the space of minutes.

EVERYTHING TO ME:

I bet it makes you laugh
Watching me work so hard to reach you
You never gave a damn
About all of those things I did to please you

All that you wanted, you found somewhere else
And nothing could drag you away from yourself

“You're the one that wanted me to get these-- things!”

TABLE FOR ONE:

Oh, I want to die alone/With my memories inside me/I want to live that life/When I could say people had faith in me/I still see that guy in my memory

GEORGE IS DEAD AND LORRAINE IS DRUNK AND I AM SAD. D:

IN LOVE WITH YOURSELF:

And when I finally awoke
I held him close and I whispered in his ear and said,
"Don't be so in love with yourself
Don't be so in love with yourself 'cause I'm not
Don't you know I'm not?"

And he said, "I know, don't you think I know?"

Lorraine has never and will never love Biff. Biff doesn't care as long as she's his girl.

HELP ME MARY:

I'm asking you, Mary, please
Temper my hatred with peace
Weave my disgust into fame
And watch how fast they run to the flame

Lorraine doesn't want to be an angry person.

GUNSHY:

Rifle in hand and two in the bush
Three count delay, I may need a little push
Take out the garbage on Tuesday nights
Seems like the small things are the only things I'll fight

[...]

Send three bucks to a comic book
Get a house, car and wife

This is the song that made me start thinking about this at all: She fights and backs down and fights and gives in until one day it isn't worth it anymore and she has Biff's gun.

AND HE SLAYED HER:

I mean, what kind of kid were you when you were a kid?
What kind of man would do what you did?
What kind of life did you think you were gonna live
When everyone in town put a price on your head?

...About how Biff is the worst.

GO WEST:

New York
Is three thousand miles away
And I'm not looking forward to following through
But it's better than always running back into you
I've closed my eyes and my bank account
And gone west, young man

And she's done with this shit. She's the richest woman in America and nobody will ever pin this on her. Just another unsolved murder case in Hill Valley, just another stone in Oak Park Cemetary.

WHIP-SMART:

I'm gonna lock my son up in a tower 'til I write my whole life story
On the back of his big brown eyes.
When they do the double dutch, that's them dancing.

And I'm gonna tell my son to join a circus so that death is cheap and
Games are just another way of life
And I'm gonna tell my son to be a prophet of mistakes because for
Every truth, there are half a million lies.

I wanted to bookend this with songs about motherhood, since we pretty much only see Lorraine in relation to Marty in canon. And also I like this song?
