All the pictures I post of Boo are f-locked, both on LJ and facebook. They will be "public" in the scrapbook function on LJ for a week, so I can link to them in a post and have them viewable.
I do this because there is a very real danger from my family of origin. They're crazy, they're stalkers, and they would do anything to be in Boo's life.
Now, for someone without those issues, or ones similar, there's always a chance that some crazy person will get the idea to steal your child. Does keeping pictures off the net reduce the exposure? Yes. But it's not a guarantee of safety. I'm a great example that people you know are more likely to hurt a child than a stranger.
The risk in putting photos up of your child on your LJ are minimal unless you already are aware of a danger.
The only pictures I would recommend HIGHLY against posting publicly are pictures of her in the bath or naked. Why? Because even innocuous pictures get picked up and passed around by pedophiles. They can and will take a photo taken with love and humour of a kid in a bathtub and pass it around their sick little buddies. BUT - since I don't think I've ever seen you post those? I think you're well in the clear.
