There's a great show by Penn & Teller on this subject. People worry about strangers, but odds are that the kids who are going to be hurt by adults are going to be hurt by friends and family.
Think of all the people you know who have been hurt by adults as kids. Think of how many of their parents knew the adults. Think of how many of them were close relatives!
In software we do threat modeling, and here's the idea: map out in your head the risk you're concerned about from the point of view of the attacker. How would this work? How easy would this be?
My own analysis is that someone could be masturbating to pictures of my kids... but they could be doing that from memory having seen them on the street. Maybe they could see the picture and decide the kid is so cute they need to kidnap them--then they need to track down where we live, figure out our schedule, and then carry out the snatching.
This is not impossible... but compare the work involved with that to the work of watching kids walk by your house who live on your block. There are so many easier ways to find someone to victimize than scouring the internet for random pictures of people who live God-knows-where.
So anyway, I try to avoid making it really easy by hiding my address and my family's real names as much as possible. But that even feels like overkill.
In case I never mention it, I love you. I love your wife, too. You two always have the best, most well-thought out, spot-on, compassionate advice. (Please tell her I said so!) I am so glad to have you back in my life and that you brought her with you!
