[RP] Building Bridges, cont. (Day 10)

Aug 02, 2010 18:07

Tim sits back at his desk, and briefly considers balling up a piece of paper to throw at Bruce when he comes in.  Not out of any innate desire to throw something at him (though he has to admit that it's still there, a little), but as a bit of a joke ( Read more... )

Bruce has a plate of cookies. Cookies seem to be how Alfred makes everything better with the boys, so it can't hurt to try. Plate balanced on one hand, he knocks with the other. And waits.

He knows he's been pushing boundaries with Tim. So really, waiting for the teen to open the door seems like too little, too late. But at this point, he has use what little he can to rebuild their damaged relationship.

...So much for throwing the paper at him when he comes in. Tim sets down the ball of paper with a wry smile and goes to answer the door, raising an eyebrow when he sees that Bruce has cookies. "Peace offering?" he asks.

Bruce nods, holding out the plate to his friend and son. "It seemed. Appropriate."

Tim nods a little and takes the plate. "...Yes," he admits, standing back so that Bruce can come in if he wants to.

For such a large man, he moves surprisingly soundlessly as he enters the room, carefully not touching the boy.

"I think. that you have misunderstood my intentions. Badly. But I'm not sure why or how I can straighten it out."

And Tim is... still holding a plate of cookies. He sets is down and takes one, breaking off a piece to chew on it while he considers his answer. It helps--a little. Chocolate chip cookies are his favorite.

"I think--we haven't been especially good at communicating these days." Even he admits that the last words he'd exchanged with Bruce hadn't been especially... friendly.

Bruce nods, the steel blue eyes calm, but it's as much a mask as what he wears out on patrol.

"How do we fix that particular. Issue?"

He frowns and glances away toward the plate of cookies, considering another one. No, he should actually talk. "I'm not sure." He gives him a wry look. "Sometimes I feel like we could use an interpreter."

"I'm not sure one exists," is the calm (sad?) reply. It would be easier if there was such a person, but it didn't seem likely. Even Dick misunderstands him frequently.

Tim grimaces slightly. "I'm not either. It would make a lot of things easier if there were."

"If wishes were horses," the man replies, beginning to quote the old saying but letting trail off.

"We will just have to make do without one." And that's the Bat speaking. It's almost an order, and there is an unspoken 'Robin' in there somewhere. They can't keep putting this off. Not when it directly impacts their effectiveness with each other. And. Other things.

He nods once, frowning a little. It's true--they can't really keep on as they have been--alternating between arguing and ignoring each other. "All right--we'll make do."

"Start." it's a command and he pulls himself up abruptly, frowning. "Tell me. What you think I'm saying. Wanting." Maybe if he can understand that, then he can find the disconnect.

Tim's eyebrow goes up. "All right." He has some questions for Bruce as well, but they can wait for now. "It seems that you're asking me to feel things about Jason--specifically with regards to our relationship--that I don't feel. Insisting that you think I should because there are legal ties doesn't change the fact that I don't."

"I can't dictate your feelings," Bruce says levelly. And he's honestly surprised that Tim thought he was trying to. "I just want everyone I care about to be. Involved. I don't want anyone feeling neglected. Or unwanted."

"It has felt like that's what you've been trying to do by insisting that Jason and I are family. Whether or not that was what you intended, it's how it felt to me. I know that we are legally brothers. But neither he, nor I, feel any kind of fraternal love toward each other. I doubt he wants me involved any more than I want to become involved."

As to the rest of Bruce's words...

He doesn't even know how to address that.
