This was, to put it mildly, a stressful week. I have been using Quicken Deluxe 99 since 1998. A week ago Friday I reached the maximum data size (I didn't know there was such a thing) and the program crashed. Not understanding the problem, I restored from my most recent backup (only 3 months ago, bad me) and typed in the missing transactions and had it crash again. I did some digging and confirmed the problem is the data size, so I restored from the backup again and printed reports on everything I felt was significant. Then it was time to research Linux-based accounting programs. I found HomeBank and gave that a whirl for a few days, only discover it does not perform reconciles in a way I find acceptable. Next up was KMyMoney, but it would require the installation of a different environment and a considerable amount of disk space. GnuCash was on every one of the recommendations when I googled for articles on the "Best Accounting Software for Linux" and that's what I'm currently trying. I don't hate it but it a lot different than Quicken and a few things I've really had to struggle with -- like how to enter our paychecks. I can't just enter the amount we were paid as then the withholding information would be absent and we need that for our taxes. I struggled with how to record the data for a solid half hour before I figured out a way that works (at least I think it works, I won't know for sure until I reconcile the bank statement.
I have no idea how long it is going to take me to input every transaction since 1/1/2022 (plus the ones from December 2021 that appear on the various bank and credit card statements). It's a daunting task but I'm nothing if not persistent.
In the realm of things going wrong, I discovered a major flaw in the chemo cap I've been working on and frogged the entire thing on Sunday. I'd also been worrying that I didn't have enough yarn for the large size, so I cast on for the smaller size. Unfortunately I've had problems with the stitches twisting and had to frog it again. The fifth try was almost going well when I realized I forgot to change needle size on the second row. I'm not sure if I'm on my sixth or seventh try at the moment. So far all that exists is a handful of knitting needles (circular and DPNs in various sizes and a ball of yarn. *sigh*
The concert at The Hill went well. After the van was loaded with Jebra's gear we (along with
mbumby drove over to see our friends Bill and Laura and have dinner with them. We ordered carryout from the Palm Palace and had a lovely meal with great people. We didn't get home until quite late which made getting up for work on Monday hard and made us late for work, but we eventually arrived and set to work.
In mom news, she appears to have discovered Salvation Army Thrift Stores and was amazed at what she found for very little money. She was shopping on a half-off day and came away with three new outfits for a little over $8. She'd also been to visit her brother and sister-in-law at the assistant living facility they've moved to and had a good time seeing them. And she wasn't repeating herself the way she has been of late, so that was good to hear as well.
The only crafting meeting I attended this week was the virtual one for Minneapolis last night. I was too stressed out to talk anyone Friday night (I was too cranky to inflict myself on the other Cranky Women) and Sunday's Stitch & Bitch was preempted by the FCB's Concert at the Hill. We were out of the house by 10:15 am and the meeting doesn't start until 10:30. Hopefully everyone will return this Sunday. I need to remember to put out meeting notice later today or tomorrow at the latest.
