I got worried reading your A/N that the chapter would end in a cliffhanger of the unhappy/traumatic variety, so I'm relieved (so far *g*) things seem to be going in a good direction.
I know Jack is always... "Jack", and somebody else in his situation would probably not be or behave so 'forgivingly' towards Ennis at this point, no matter how much Ennis had changed and grown up all these years. So I think, in the context of their relationship and their characters, you've done a great job showing that odd, but very human, mix of contrasting thoughts and reactions at finding each other again and discovering how much they've changed, and how much they've stayed the same. I loved how you showed Jack "not listening" to Ennis at the restaurant, but silently assessing the 'new' Ennis. Another significant moment of how cautiously Ennis is behaving was him virtually declaring his undying love for Jack as they were waiting for the waitress to come take their orders, but falling short of taking a further step towards a full blown proposal (similarly to what he did in a previous chapter when he made a 'hypothetical' proposal to Jack).
Can't wait for the remaining chapters now!...
