Glee - SLL Verse - Can't Lose You

It was going great.  His boys were playing the game they loved and they were winning.

It was the final game of the season, the final quarter of the deciding game for the championship.  Finn and Puck had both gotten football scholarships to Ohio State University and were chosen for this all-star team to play over the summer.  College was starting in a week for all three of them at OSU, Kurt on a music scholarship.

As much as Kurt didn’t really understand the rules or the plays or the positions, he cheered when Finn would make a touchdown or Puck tackled the opposing players.  The crowd was screaming and cheering, jumping around.  Kurt was out of his seat, shouting and clapping as the teams lined up to start another play.

He was excited and nervous for tonight.  His boys were going to win this game.  He was going to take them to Breadstix to celebrate and then he was going to tell them the news.  A month ago, when he found out, he was just scared.  Could they handle this?  Would they be able to manage school and parenthood?  It was frightening, but he was feeling more confident now.

But as the play ended, the crack of plastic that always set Kurt on edge for just a moment echoing across the field was made worse by the fact that it was Puck on the bottom of that collision.  After a few seconds, there was no rising cheer as Puck stood up.  There was no nonchalant wave to the crowd, Puck searching out Kurt’s eyes to let him know he was okay.  There were no playful pats on Puck’s back or hugs from teammates.

The stands fell silent as they watched Puck lie there after everyone moved away.  A few seconds later, the coach and the medic approached, kneeling beside him.  Kurt watched, terrified, as the players of both teams fell to one knee on the sidelines and the crowds started murmuring.  It wasn’t until he was pushing people aside as he ran down the stands that Kurt even realized he was moving.  “No.”  He was muttering it under his breath, over and over.  “No.”  Someone grabbed his arm, trying to stop him, but Kurt wrenched himself free, frantically making his way down.  “No!”  That time, he was shouting.

When he reached the field, he was stopped again.

“Kurt, don’t!”  Finn was holding his wrist, still kneeling, looking up at him.

“But-”

“We can’t do anything,” Finn insisted, shaking his head.

“Finn, get up!  He’s hurt!”

“I…  I can’t.  Kurt, it’s the rules.  We have to stay down until he’s up or off the field.”

“Finn!” Kurt screeched.  “We can’t just stay here!”

Finn pulled Kurt down, wrapping his arms around him, tucking Kurt’s face into his neck.  “He’ll be okay.  He’s tough.  He’ll be okay.”

Kurt could feel the tears welling in his eyes, could hear them in Finn’s voice.  This couldn’t be happening.  That was one of his baby’s fathers and this could not happen.

“Puckerman!” he screamed.  “I swear to God, if you don’t get up I am never forgiving you!”  Finn rocked him, murmuring, kissing, making promises he couldn’t keep, couldn’t know.

After what felt like an agonizingly long time, filled with tears and whispers and kisses of comfort, a voice finally carried across the field.

It was quiet at first, a soft word.  Then it came again, louder, until Kurt could make out Puck’s voice, strained but insistent, “I’m okay!”  The coach and medic were telling him to be quiet and hold still, checking him for injuries.  Kurt burst into tears hearing him.

Finally, Puck was stumbling toward the sideline.  “I’m okay,” he whispered, dropping down next to Kurt.  Kurt turned and grabbed onto Puck, still crying.  Puck winced and let out a hiss of pain, so Kurt let go, staring with wide eyes.  “Just a dislocated shoulder.  It’ll be fine.”

“You moron!”  Kurt smacked him across the chest.  “I can’t fucking lose you!  Not either of you!”

Finn pulled them both into a hug as the team started to move back to the field for the next play.  Puck would be out of the game, possibly out of the season when they got to school.  But at that exact moment, all any of them cared about was that he was alive.
