There was nothing left for Jocelyn Taylor in England. Everything that could fetch a price was sold, her relatives dead, and nothing left but pain and disgrace at what she once was to keep her company. The only thing left to her was the hope that a man she had not seen in years would remember her, and that he would be compelled by the fondness of memory to come to her aid. She knew he had achieved much since she last saw him, and hoped that he, being so well connected, knew of a family seeking a Governess and could recommend her for the position. That was all she felt she could expect considering the circumstances, and if it did not fill her with confidence in her future, well that was a luxury she did not have.
