Meme Answer!

Okay here's the questions from classics_lover from the meme on my last post:
I'd like to know more about what excites you academically, and what excites you in your free time (what little of it you have, lol). Favourite books/authors? Particular genres of movie? Is there a subject in college you can't get enough of? Is there something you would have liked to have done (say, instead of the course of DOOM which sounds fairly terrible at best).

What excites me academically?
I would have said history, but I don't get to take many classes oddly enough, the ones I did take are just because I needed the credits rather than a desire to take it, and I enjoyed the learning of history in high school far more than I felt in college. I felt I had more freedom for creativity than I do now.

So, I'd have to say the thing I enjoy the most was the project I had to do in my Local History class. As terrible as that professor was, I got to use my genealogy skills in researching two people from a couple of tombstones in a cemetery. I suppose that not everyone may view family history and genealogy as a legitimate academic pursuit but it does in fact take work, analysis, and experience with primary records. I use it all the time at work in fact.

What excites me in my free time?
Good stories on my flist, communicating with people online, getting to go to cool museums or historic sites (Revolutionary War, ftw!), genealogy (even helping other people with their family tree), watching a funny movie or show, a day where I don't have to go to school, work, and get to go shopping for books or something, Disneyworld (Yes, I love Disneyworld, I have gone to the parks by myself and had plenty of fun).

Favourite Books/Authors?
I can't say I have a favorite author or even a favorite book that I'll read time and time again. I haven't been able to read for pleasure for awhile, so this question is kind of hard. A childhood favorite was Ella Enchanted. I also like Jane Austen as an author. Historically I think David McCullough writes in a lively style and doesn't make history dry. Of course, I've yet to read alex_beecroft's book or joyful_molly's, so maybe I'll have two new favorite books and authors!

Genres of Movie?
Romantic-comedy or just comedy in general. My personal philosophy on entertaintment is that it shouldn't be too depressing since real life isn't always funny or happy, at least lately. There's a place for weighty movies and drama, but I'd prefer to laugh. I'll also go historical, particularly if there are navymen *cough*.

Is there a subject in college I can't get enough of?
Seriously? Not much. One of the classes I really liked was Mass Communication and Society because not only was it interesting with the history of mass communication but I got to be creative with some of the assignments like writing a basic outline for a movie (mine was a campy time-travel romance/comedy) and a pr plan for a Senator in the midst of scandal. I'm taking History of American Mass Media online this semester, but I find I don't have time to do more than the bare minimum. It kind of makes me sad that my other classes are so demanding I can't pay attention to the two I would normally really enjoy (History of Am. Mass Media and my Independent Study for Family History.).

Of course, those are the classes I've taken, so I guess I wish I could take more history of entertainment and genealogy.

Is there something I would have liked to have done?
I wish I weren't so constricted by the university studies requirements (general shit classes that have nothing to do with real skills in my opinion) and the classes of a major that only barely has anything to do with my future career (archives) because there are tons of classes I'd like to take.

For instance: I would love to take History of the Musical or the Film Musical or Creative Writing or Intermediate Creative Writing or Advanced Creative Writing. I'd like Art History or Screenwriting or Film History. A class on editing manuscripts and other works of writing would be a good skill to have too, and one I think would be a lot of work but in the end it would help my writing I think.

Obviously if I were in charge of getting a degree, I'd do a hodge podge of things that relate to history, writing, art, and entertainment. If I could, I would, but it's too late and I need a practical degree before I could indulge in that sort of stuff. ;)
