It's kind of a long story. I wasn't there, so I only know what I've read and he doesn't seem to want to talk about it.

He had a bad experience with Sauron which ended in a pretty horrific death for him.

It was a long long time ago, in Middle-earth. Times have changed. Nothing like that could happen again here.
