In many instances, true love will always conquer all. At least that is what the fairy tale books what everyone to believe. Although there are other readings that like to prove other wise. These readings include The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald as well as The Crucible written by Arthur Miller. One of the really strong points in these works is; love does not conquer all. Love can only make it so far, according to the lives of John and Elizabeth Proctor. The lies and heartache become too powerful for even the
strongest of loves, not only between a man and his wife, but between a man and his mistress, to over come. Jay Gatsby was a man who knew what he wanted. Although he did not know that loving someone could cause his downfall.
Daisy, Gatsby’s interest shares his love for her. When Nick was talking with her and she realized whom that man was that lived across the way was she just had to go over. Daisy made an appearance at one of Gatsby’s crazy parties he was always throwing (what she didn’t know was that he was throwing them for her, a desperate attempt to show her what he’s become.) just to let him know she was there. Gatsby fell in love all over again, asking Nick to ask Daisy over, hoping that they would get a chance to chat. All of his life since he met Daisy he loved her. After he had left for the Army he still loved her, wrote her everyday as well. Except his love never received the letters for her mother took them and hid them. Proving in a way that love does not always find a way when you want it to. Daisy grew up and was married, although she never forgot about Gatsby, which is why she agreed to meet with Nick, knowing that Gatsby would attend. The Buchanan’s were not the best of people. They let money get to their heads and invade the way they thought. Tom and his wife had a baby girl, and all that Daisy could say about it was “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”. Gatsby’s love interest knew that love cannot give her the diamond rings she wanted or even the pretty car she seen down at the lot. She knew that love could not save her or her daughter from what becomes of girls. Daisy thinks that looking beautiful and not talking much will get you what you want, again, proving that love is not as strong as it is told to be. Gatsby knew that just telling Daisy he loved her was not going to win her over, so he got money any way he knew how, he did not care how ... he just needed to get it. And he did. Gatsby spend his whole life doing all he could to get her attention, and when he did, he found out that love could not bring her back to him. “The tragic result of this pursuit is the death of Gatsby himself, as he becomes a victim of his own dreams” (Wyly 45). All Gatsby had done was set himself up for heartache and death, all for the love of Daisy Buchanan. Arthur Miller once said “can anyone remember love? It’s like trying to summon up the smell of roses in a cellar. You might see a rose, but never the perfume”, he’s almost saying the thought of love is nice, but un till it’s shown, it’s hard to believe (Brainy quotes). Just because the words are said does not always mean it’s true.
Abigail Williams was one to believe in the emotion. She felt as if John Proctor really loved her. He had to have felt something for her or else he wouldn’t have committed adultery. Which means the vows he took with his wife were broken proving once again that the love a man had for his wife couldn’t withstand the power of temptation, maybe there was some witchcraft in Salem. Proctor had apologized after his wife had found out what happened, but still that didn’t change Elizabeth’s feelings towards him. They hardly even talked with each other, only being decent in front of their children, showing that love for children is different than the promise you make to your husband or wife. John gets sick and tired of his wife not talking to him, he doesn’t realize how badly “fooling around” could harm someone. “You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it. Let you look to your own improvement before you go to judge your husband”, he had said to her. Knowing that he not only hurt his wife, but also by making Abby feel that she had him too, it angered her that he would not be with her so she conjured up the lie of witchcraft. She had all of Salem believe that there were witches she almost believed herself. When at court Proctor went to defend his wife, he could not completely un till he told the story about Abby and him, to let the judge know why Abby was so outraged. “In trying to save her, he is himself charged with witchcraft. So, he does suffer for his guilt- but for a different guilt, for adultery, not for witchcraft”. (Popkin 142). He knows that he is going to be hanged. And it is at this time that Elizabeth and John show more of their love for each other, but it’s too late. Their love could not save them once they tried. Showing to everyone that love is not this power magic that can save people from death, or themselves entirely.
Love can only make it to a point. These writers have a message to relay. They are showing their readers that real life and real love are not perfect fairy tales, they bring sort of a realization to their readers. F. Scott Fitzgerald focused on how people would do anything for the one they love, change their whole lifestyle. And yet still, nothing becomes of it, Gatsby’s dreams, and his life ended. He proved that even to some people, money is more important than love, it’s how you’re viewed. In The Crucible Arthur Miller shows that even the married have problems, and nothing is sacred forever, something will always ruin it. Proctor did love his wife, but maybe that love wasn’t strong enough, because he ended up dieing for the act he committed against his wife. It’s almost as if these writers are trying to open their reader’s eyes, to show them, that no amount of love could change your destiny. And in all reality, the only thing that conquered these characters was heartache, pain, and death, which were only caused by the characters themselves.
