Froggy Update
Please refer to doc_mystery 's post regarding details of the recent frog upset. Basically, our cat Zoe got into Girl-O's room and knocked down the "fragile ecosystem" containing 2 African Dwarf Frogs, a sprig of bamboo, specially gravel infused with nitrifying bacteria and pond water full of yummy frog poop and other nutrients.
Girl-O's room is cleaned up. Most of the water was absorbed by her (thankfully washable) Ikea rug. Said rug is now in the clothes washer with various towels used for sopping up. We threw out the unsalvageable stuff and rinsed the salvageable stuff. I've wiped down the desk and floor with Lysol/water solution.
I'm a little worried about the frogs though. Although I used spring water, as the instructions said, the tank water looks less like the slightly murky pond water it's supposed to resemble, and more like "Nestle's Crystal Clear Bottled Water". The frogs themselves are still in a state of shock and spend their time either floating spread eagle in the tank or curling up in what I suppose is a froggy fetal position. But they are still alive. Time will tell, I suppose.
The next pet we get is going to be able to defend itself against a cat. No hamsters, no fish. Just a medium-sized to biggish dog.
