Well, my second semester of graduate school is halfway over and I am flying high. Things just keep going my way (knock on wood). First of all, I got in to graduate school. That was a plus. Not to mention it's a fabulous program. I did very well my first semester, and I'm doing very well now, too. I have one more midterm on Tuesday, and so far they've all gone well and I'm thinking the same for this one. I have 3 really wonderful papers I'm writing (due in May) that I'm very interested in. One is all about ancient Akragas (Agrigento), and I'm focusing on the colonization of the settlement (city planning) and the Vally of the Temples; the next is sort of a historiographical paper on J.D. Beazley and the Berlin Paper, but I'm liking it so far; and the last is perhaps my favorite: a paper all about the Roman wall paintings (2nd through 4th styles) at the Villa di Poppea at Oplontis. It makes me drool. Yes, I am a nerd for the Classics.
Well, not only am I going to Claremont for spring break to see my amazing boyfriend, Peter, some awesome girlfriends in LA, and my former jiu-jitsu/MMA instructor, but I just received news of acceptance into the American Academy in Rome's Summer Program in Archaeology!!! They only accept 12 applicants out of the many (hundreds) who apply, AND another girl in my program also got in!!! Very exciting. So I'll be in Rome for 7 weeks this summer, but before that my parents are taking me to Paris! AND THEY'RE TAKING PETER!!!! Ahhhhh I can't wait to see the Louvre, and we're also trying for grounds tickets to the French Open! I'm very excited. I'm elated. Couldn't be happier. Things are fantastic right now.
Last night my dad and I went to the opera "Beauty and the Beast." It wasn't good at all. First it was translated from the French into English (ewww opera in English), then half of it was speaking, then the only good singer was the soprano (who played "Beauty"), and granted she was excellent (she had just previously played Papagena at the Met) but it couldn't make up for the difference. So we slipped out at the intermission, came home where we found my mom and her co-coach for mock trial. Their 4 teams for UHS had SWEPT the regional tournament, taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places!!! So we drank some Prosecco, ate blueberries, and watched "Love, ACtually." Fabulous night. Fabulous.
Ciao, tutti!!!
