"Enjoy your life," a guy screamed at me on the sidewalk this evening. We were hurrying down the Rue de la Roquette in Paris, on Place de la Bastille, and a thunderstorm was gathering. He was probably drunk, but I reckoned he probably had a point anyway.
Be Here Now is a good mantra--I'm thinking of putting it on my course syllabi from now on. But it's damn hard. I'd rather be here, now--Paris, with Mike, at the dawning of the middle portion of my life--than anywhere else, and yet I still have to force myself to Be Here Now, Be Here Now. I don't want to wait for this trip to be in the past before I can fully enjoy it. The thing is, as a writer I recollect in tranquility. And tranquility is pretty rare.
So off the internet, and off to somewhere Here and Now.
