buzz buzz, just because

While walking to the studio shortly after our last little thunderstorm, I almost stepped on a honeybee, practically stuck on the sidewalk, wings too wet for her to fly. I hate seeing bugs trampled on the sidewalk, especially bees... so I tried to coax her onto a leaf, so I could transfer her elsewhere... she was not having it. So I figured she was too groggy to sting me and just let her crawl up onto my fingers.

I was still crouching on the sidewalk, gently prodding the bee with my fingers, when a stroller-pushing Mom and her toddler walked by. The little boy, about 4, slowed down to see what I was doing, and then said with genuine, wide-eyed alarm, "LOOK OUT! That's a BEE!" And I replied, "Yeah, I know. She won't sting me, she's too tired. Her wings are too wet for her to fly so I'm just gonna to put her on this flower out of everybody's way."

At this point Mom was trying to gently coax her kid along, but he was totally transfixed by this bee CRAWLING on my HAND, WITHOUT INJURY TO MYSELF... After I slowly eased her onto a patch of lavender he yelled, "WOW! THAT WAS AMAZING!" and pulled on his mom repeating, "Did you see!? Mom, did you see!? Did you see the BEE!?"

That kid is going to get stung SO many times now.
