Xiayou: 2, Foul Vermin: 0

Technically, Rich and I are breaking our lease by owning a cat. Technically, our landlord is not living up to his end of the bargain either by maintaining our apartment in such conditions as to allow giant mutant insects to prosper under our refigerator. These things are apparently capable of surviving several extermination sessions and emerge periodically to sow fear and disgust into my otherwise peaceful existence. I believe the fact that Xiayou has hunted then down and killed them before they could take me away to their dark lair, as I imagine they intend to do, is evidence of the universe restoring its balance.

The first of these incidents occurred a couple of weeks ago when I spotted what can only be described as a grossly oversized cockroach lying in Xiayou's litter box. I immediately fetched Rich to ascertain whether the creature was in fact dead, which it indeed turned out to be. We postulated that Xiaoyu killed the vermin and subsequently brought it to her litter box to let it know exactly what she thought of it.

The second encounter took place last night. Whilst curled up on the couch watching American Idol I saw something scuttle across the floor. I thought it was a mouse at first, but upon a closer look I was seized by a fit of revulsion-- it was a giant insect, easily two inches long and moving very quickly. I immediately took flight, but I needn't have worried--the cat was already on top of it. Ultimately, it was Rich who eliminated the offending arthropod, but I am certain Xiaoyu would have disposed of it herself if given the chance-- though she probably would have batted it around a bit first and I'm afraid that's a little more than I could have handled.
